CBC News is looking for an Executive Producer to lead the team that programs our news FAST channels, including CBC News Explore and eventually several local streaming channels.

You oversee the operational programming on those channels, supervise and develop staff, and guide streaming decisions and planning in close co-operation with CBC News teams across Canada.

You prioritize the needs of our streaming audience, delivering modular and live CBC News video content in line with strategic objectives, including reaching new users and meeting audience interests in different dayparts. You're constantly finding new and innovative ways to improve their experience and inspire others to do the same.

With knowledge of storytelling formats, the constantly evolving off-platform business, and streaming technologies, you're a key player in helping to evolve and communicate the CBC News video strategy and best practices. You're a skilled multitasker and creative problem-solver who is unfazed by technical and structural challenges.

Motivating teams to deliver a high-quality experience to a best-in-class suite of streaming channels, you're a strong editorial leader with exceptional organizational, decision-making, communication and interpersonal skills. You have a comprehensive understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You're comfortable with constant change, and can adapt and troubleshoot with grace.

This is a full-time permanent position, based in Toronto.

Job responsibilities
  • Lead team to team to plan, organize and develop daily programming on all channels, including live and breaking event coverage, news shows and packaging the best of CBC News video into a cohesive audience experience.
  • Work collaboratively across CBC News teams to plan and deliver streaming content.
  • Develop new ways to let viewers of the channels know what is playing.
  • Maintain a programming schedule for all streaming channels including delivery of program guide information.
  • Use audience data to make strategic programming decisions in collaboration with newsroom leaders.
  • Develop close relationships with teams that manage video outside of the news department, including in Marketing & Communications, Technology & Infrastructure and Product.
  • Work closely with CBC Gem team to develop and execute news streaming strategy on our OTT platform.
  • Make immediate decisions in complex and stressful environments.
  • Plan and request the staffing, financial and resource requirements needed for 24/7 streaming.
  • Direct and oversee staff scheduling and training.
  • Refine or create new workflows as required.
  • Responsible for team development by providing mentorship and opportunities, including ongoing feedback.
  • Monitor and flag streaming industry trends and changes.
Relevant skills & experience
  • Minimum seven years of daily news experience, which must include supervising people in a news environment.
  • Proven ability to assign, manage and motivate staff. Comfortable leading team activities to refine or develop new workflows and audience experiences.
  • Knowledge of and experience with CBC internal systems and workflows, such as DTV and MPX; with content lineups and outlooks.
  • Aptitude with text and video content management systems.
  • Understanding of metadata and the significant role it plays in content management.
  • Excellent journalistic skills. Understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Proven ability to co-ordinate with a variety of CBC departments in a productive manner and mediate conflicts as they develop.
  • Knowledge of audience habits, news and streaming industry trends is an asset.
  • Ability to think critically and work independently.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Open mindset.
  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment.
  • University degree or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and statutory holidays, unexpected overtime situations when required.
