Your role

As a Manager, Business & Rights , you will work closely with the independent production community and be responsible for negotiating and drafting development contracts, broadcast licenses and related agreements, as well as making business recommendations to the senior leaders of the organization. You will work on content across a variety of genres, including on programming in drama, comedy, kids, factual, documentary and digital originals.

In the role you will be responsible for reviewing and assessing the appropriate budget and financing for development projects on a case by case basis. The successful incumbent decides how to approach negotiations and structure deals to satisfy requirements needed to exploit content on multiple platforms and also crafts contracts that represent and protect CBC's position.

Other responsibilities of this role include:

  • Assessing the eligibility of financing opportunities for CBC programming.
  • Reviewing documentation from independent producers, including but not limited to development budgets, financing plans, third party financing agreements, and various types of chain of title documentation.
  • Ensuring CBC's business interests are secured and that CBC is meeting its contractual requirements.
  • Providing counsel to creative executives to best ensure programs are structured appropriately to maximize financing opportunities.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Legal training, preferably with experience in the entertainment industry.
  • A passion for television and film production and either experience in or a willingness to learn negotiating techniques, contract law, entertainment and copyright law, corporate business practices, and the funding rules of various agencies including provincial funders, CAVCO and CMF.
  • Experience drafting & reviewing agreements.
  • Experience working with budgets and cash flows.
  • Ability to interpret and draft the intentions of the parties into a written contract while observing the applicable regulatory bodies and funding guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, manage tight deadlines, and work under pressure.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work beyond regular office hours during peak periods of activity as well as the flexibility to attend industry functions and events.
  • Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
