Main Purpose & Function


As part of the Parks Management Team, the Superintendent - Park Board for VanDusen Botanical Garden and Bloedel Conservatory is responsible for the planning, supervision, leadership and delivery of operations and maintenance services in support of both the garden and conservatory.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Supervises the integrated operation and maintenance of two prominent destination attractions, which includes horticulture, plant collections, garden amenities, turf management, landscape construction, irrigation, renovation and repair, stakeholder engagement and facilitation of events in green spaces, all using a high degree of independent judgment within established safety guidelines, procedures and policies.


Plans, schedules, prioritizes and reviews the work of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance staff in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of all aspects of garden operations.

Establishes and maintains effective communication and coordination with VanDusen and Bloedel's joint operating partner, the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association, other divisions and departments within the Park Board, the City, consultants, contractors, third party event organizers, different levels of government, outside agencies, not-for-profit organizations and the general public.

Working closely with the Garden Director and Supervisor of Revenue and Visitor Services, supports and facilitates any large public events within the gardens that require operational input, support and management.


Provides supervision and leadership to staff, including hiring and termination, discipline, performance and attendance management, coaching, training, development and guidance.

Manages operating and capital budgets, and provides input and recommendations into the budget process.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a recognized Horticulture Trades Apprenticeship along with Trades qualifications recognized in British Columbia or postsecondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function including extensive experience in the applicable trade, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 35 years of supervisory experience with progressively increasing responsibility, preferably within a public sector unionized environment.
  • Preferred experience in working for botanical gardens or destination attractions with a strong focus on horticulture.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a member of a management team, working cooperatively with front line staff, Association staff, other Park Board divisions and City departments, different levels of government, bargaining units, consultants, contractors, notforprofit organizations, associations and the general public.
  • Considerable knowledge in the core functions of park operations including horticulture, plant knowledge, turf management, irrigation, general landscape maintenance, ice and snow control and traffic control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of botanical gardens, tropical conservatories and importance of its collections and plant displays.
  • Extensive knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in parks.
  • A high level of personal and professional skills including demonstrated ability to plan work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and create and maintain accurate records.
  • Considerable experience in procurement and budget management.
  • Strong working knowledge of BC Statutes, including WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety regulations, Collective Agreements and other relevant legislation.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal skills including strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to train and coach others, conflict resolution and effective customer service.
  • Ability to speak and engage with media during interview opportunities
  • Proficiency in the use of corporate productivity software including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, LAGAN and SAP.
  • Transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements of the Board of Parks and Recreation.
