Main Purpose & Function
This role involves a hands-on supervisory position where you will lead, manage, and coordinate the daily operations of assigned work crews. These teams are responsible for both skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to the upkeep of landscape areas within the park system. The ability to interact tactfully and effectively with the public and various stakeholders is essential. You will oversee staff in all facets of park management and provide support in the absence of the Superintendent.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will be proficient in planning, organizing, and overseeing the tasks assigned to subordinates while ensuring the safety of work crews and the appropriate use of materials, tools, and equipment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising work crews and evaluating their performance.
  • Maintaining accurate shop records and inventory.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of improved work methods and techniques.
  • Performing related duties as required.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a Landscape Horticulture Apprenticeship Program, complemented by relevant horticultural and maintenance experience.
  • Possession of a valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate for the Province of BC, as applicable.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and supervising a team, including Trades Gardeners, Equipment Operators, and Operations Workers.
  • Red Seal certification and completion of the Vancouver Park Board's Apprenticeship Program is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of methodologies, best practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in landscape maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of turf management, sports field renovations, and irrigation techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions.
  • Proficient in coordinating, organizing, and supervising team members effectively.
  • Capability to follow both written and verbal instructions while maintaining accurate records.
  • Awareness of safety regulations and precautions relevant to the trade.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build a cohesive team and interact effectively with the public and staff.
  • Responsibility for small shop operations and completing tasks with minimal oversight.
