Protection and Control Engineer

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is an employer of choice within the energy sector. The Regulated Engineering Services Division is focused on providing quality project management as well as engineering design services and support. We currently have an opening in the Protection, Control & Communications (PCC) Engineering Department for a Protection and Control (P&C) Engineer with an emphasis on automation and device integration.
Responsibilities:
You will design, implement, and support protection and control solutions for isolated diesel plant systems including integration of renewable energy and energy storage systems, as well as for grid-supported gas turbines, thermal and hydroelectric plants, and associated infrastructure. You will be involved in a wide range of technologies including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and other auxiliary package automation systems. This position supports operations, as well as project execution activities such as:
- Plant automation and monitoring systems design
- Controller (PLC or DCS Systems) and HMI programming
- Assessment of new technologies and determination of optimal solution
- Selection and procurement of P&C equipment
- Preparation of equipment configurations and settings
- Preparation of contract documents and technical specifications for a wide variety of projects
- On-site supervision and support during installation and commissioning
- Interfacing with other discipline engineers and operations staff on a diverse array of projects and operational issues
Job Requirements:
- Graduation from a recognized university with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree - Electrical Engineering preferred; Process or Mechatronics Engineering will also be considered. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Eligibility for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) as either a professional member or engineer-in-training
- Experience in the design, implementation, and troubleshooting of control equipment and systems; experience with diesel systems would be an asset
- Experience in preparing specifications, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Experience in an assortment of controller and HMI programming languages would be an asset
- Experience in the integration of various serial and Internet Protocol communication protocols would be an asset
- Effective communication, team, and leadership skills
- Travel to remote Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro sites, including coastal Labrador locations, is required
