Communications Engineer

We currently have an opening for a Communications Engineer in the Power Supply Engineering Services team. Reporting to the Program Manager - Transmission and Civil, you will work to provide engineering and project execution support with a focus on the communication systems used in the power production and transmission process.

The Power Supply Engineering Services Division provides project management as well as engineering design services and support for non-regulated assets. Responsibilities:

You will design, implement, and support modern industrial communications and SCADA systems. This includes a wide range of technologies with a focus on local and wide area networking, including routers, switches, gateways, firewalls, etc., low level and long range fiber optics, microwave radio, mobile radio, PBX telephone systems, , SCADA RTUs and other voice and data telecommunications systems. This position supports technical and project execution activities including but not necessarily limited to:

  • Adherence to Hydro safety requirements
  • Prepare and/or provide support for the development of technical specifications, drawings, schematics wiring lists, equipment lists and work packages;
  • Prepare communication system designs of local and wide area networks;
  • Select and procure communications equipment and systems;
  • Prepare equipment configurations and settings;
  • Prepare conceptual designs, feasibility studies, new technology selection, and estimates for a variety of system modifications or expansions;
  • Provide project engineering and/or project management support such as assist in preparing project estimates, schedules, resource requirements, managing procurement and construction contracts, defining quality testing requirements, and other duties as necessary;
  • Prepare contract and tendering specifications and documents for the procurement of materials and/or services;
  • Provide technical support during the execution of capital projects, including participation in factory acceptance testing, and installation and commissioning activities, as required;
  • Prepare and/or review as built drawings, and operating and maintenance manuals;
  • Affixing professional engineering seal to documents and drawings for communication components and systems.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Electrical) with a minimum of 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in industrial system communications, preferably with an electric utility
  • Eligible for professional engineering membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
  • Relevant experience in the selection, design, configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting of communication equipment and systems
  • Experience in IP networking and IP security; configuration of related devices, especially experience with Cisco products and/or Cisco certifications, would be an asset
  • Experience in preparing specifications, drawings, and wiring diagrams
  • Experience in network architecture design required for both the operational and administrative needs of a power utility would be an asset
  • Knowledge of microwave radio, VHF radio, UHF radio, RTUs, IED interfacing, power line carrier, and DC power systems would be an asset
  • A working knowledge of SCADA and protection protocols and related test equipment would be an asset
  • Experience in supervising equipment installation and commissioning would be an asset
  • Effective written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work with and/or lead a multi-discipline team of both internal and external resources
  • Travel to Hydro project sites will be necessary as well as potential travel within Canada and/or international locations as appropriate
