About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Control Systems Engineering Specialist to join our team at Irving Oil Limited. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing our existing refinery control system configurations by implementing new automation and protection systems and strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement innovative and complex system integration, automation and control logic and safeguarding logic to enhance performance of the Refinery.
  • Lead the implementation of those solutions through various development phases and manage the automation scope of workflow and project packages.
  • Lead commissioning, testing and verification activities performed by diverse teams of skilled contributors. Ensure systems perform as required to prevent and mitigate HSE critical events.
  • Execute maintenance and improvement activities for process automation and protection systems including configuration and programming activities. Manage various automation system contractors and represent Irving Oil in dealings with technical teams from outside organizations.
  • Monitor automation system performance and develop solutions for optimization and to help improve efficiency. This includes developing and implementing preventive and predictive maintenance routines and activities. Execute life cycle and risk management activities and ensure appropriate actions are taken to prevent or minimize the effect and duration of hardware failures.
  • Provide guidance to multi-discipline project and operations teams and helps support engineering teams develop work packages through providing design input and supporting HAZOP & LOPA activities.
  • Implement and manage work flow processes to execute changes to enhance cyber security of critical systems and equipment and ensure continued operation of the automation systems.

Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical, attention to detail.
  • Must be able to quickly shift focus based on needs of the operation.
  • Self-starter, ability to multitask, proven ability to effectively contribute in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • NBSCETT PTech Certification, Red Seal is an asset.
  • 10+ years of experience in IT including 5+ years industrial environment (refining preferred).
  • Experience with OT systems such as Honeywell Experion and TPS DCS, Rockwell PLCs, SIS & Machinery Monitoring Systems.
  • Experience with automation system and computer hardware troubleshooting, repair and replacement.
  • Experience configuring and supporting OT networking and firewalls.
  • Experience in cybersecurity and best practices in OT environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows active directory.
