The Northern Birthwork Collective (NBC) is a collaborative effort based in the Northwest Territories (NWT) that was founded in June 2020 and became a project on the MakeWay Charitable Society Shared Platform in October 2020.

NBC's mission is to provide cost supported programming and services for all stages of the reproductive journey including conception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, miscarriage, loss, abortion, and parenting.

We intend to provide continuous education to members of our community and grow a territory wide network of birthworkers who can provide collective care that is grounded in our values.

We acknowledge that colonization has had a great impact on our bodies and traditions and believe that revitalizing traditional knowledge is a crucial step in our collective healing.


Our office is located in Yellowknife, NT where we offer various programs including abortion support, support for those who are evacuated from remote communities for their reproductive health care, access to training opportunities for emerging birthworkers, and support for people from underserved communities to access birthwork/doula services.

Additionally, we are reproductive justice advocates and are dedicated to creating positive change for our service users and community.

Position Overview:


Working alongside and reporting to the Project Director (PD), the NBC Manager - Indigenous Initiatives is responsible for overseeing and managing the development, implementation and coordination of Indigenous initiatives at NBC.

This includes our Indigenous Birthwork Training program, our Knowledge Keepers Advisory Circle, developing and maintaining partnerships with Indigenous organizations, and advancing Indigenous Birthwork related programming.

Term: 1 year contract with opportunity for extension (dependent on funding)

$45/hour

Hours: 30 hours per week

Salary range:
$70,200

The position is open to Indigenous residents across the NWT, Nunavut and Yukon. Priority will be given to NWT residents. Our office is located in Yellowknife but remote work is available for this position.

Core Responsibilities:

Indigenous Birthwork Training

  • Work collaboratively with NBC's curriculum development consultants to support the development and implementation of the Indigenous Birthwork Training
  • Oversee planning and logistics of delivering and launching the Indigenous Birthwork Training upon completion of development

Knowledge Keepers Advisory Circle

  • Oversee and coordinate quarterly Knowledge Keepers Advisory Circle meeting
  • Implement advice received from Knowledge Keepers in Indigenous initiatives at NBC

Developing and maintaining partnerships

  • Build and maintain relationships with partners, including other Indigenous led organizations and Indigenous governments with the purpose of advancing and expanding Indigenous birthwork across the NWT
  • Develop strategies for increasing awareness of NBC Indigenous initiatives across the NWT

Indigenous Birthwork Programs/Services

  • Work collaboratively with Indigenous birthworkers at NBC to oversee, as well as set goals, objectives and scope of Indigenous led birthwork program delivery (ie. childbirth education, workshops, events, etc.
  • Develop and implement strategies for Indigenous led birthwork in remote communities across the NWT in partnership with Indigenous organizations and governments

Other

  • Contribute to NBC's social media content
  • Develop and monitor budgets for Indigenous initiatives at NBC
  • Assist in updating policies and procedures for Indigenous initiatives

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Passionate about reproductive justice and enthusiastic about the mission, core values, and goals of NBC
  • Knowledge of Northern social and cultural contexts and experience working with Northern communities
  • Successful completion of postsecondary training or education in a related field (e.g., Project Management and coordination, etc.) is an asset but relevant combinations of experience and education will also be considered
  • Experience with traumainformed practices is an asset
  • Experience in project management (coordination, scheduling, budgets, strategy, accountability, etc.) is an asset
  • Organized, detailoriented, and efficient, with strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Great written and verbal skills
  • Strong networking skills and experience building partnerships is an asset
  • Selfstarter who takes initiative and can work with mínimal supervision
  • Ability and desire to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Willingness to learn and ability to follow direction and structure

Remuneration:

The salary is at a rate of $45/hr. The Manager of Indigenous Initiatives will be paid $70,200 for 30 hrs/week of work. This includes 3 weeks of vacation, paid sick days, and a competitive employee benefits package. You will be provided
