Native Women's Association of Canada is a National Indigenous Organization representing the political voice of Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse people in Canada, inclusive of First Nations on and off reserve, status and non-status, disenfranchised, Métis and Inuit. They were founded on the collective goal to enhance, promote and foster the social, economic, cultural and political well-being of Indigenous women within their respective communities and Canada societies.

**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**

The Media Relations Specialist will bring expertise to the Native Women’s Association Office of the President by developing and executing media and public relations strategies and plans to promote the organization through external media avenues.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**

The Media Relations Specialist will:

- Help develop, implement and measure external media-based communications plans and strategies
- Prepare a weekly media plan to garner media coverage
- Manage day-to-day media relations/media requests
- Brief President on issues and key messages
- Develop written materials including press releases, background notes, Q&As, op-eds and media standby statements on emerging and existing issues as required
- Build or have existing relationships with key national and provincial media contacts
- Identify opportunities to proactively pitch stores to the media for publication
- Align media messaging with the overall messaging of the organization
- Promote media coverage through NWAC President’s social media channels
- Any other duties as assigned from time to time

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.
- 3-5 years experience in a media relations role
- Knowledge of journalistic principles, communications guidelines and editing
- Experienced writer with portfolio of published news releases, op-eds and other media collaterals
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Organized with ability to multitask
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, internet, media monitoring software and other PR tools
- Demonstrated success with social media tools including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc.
- Must be able to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment

**KNOWLEDGE**
- Some knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally, their cultures, histories and traditions;
- Knowledge and understanding of contemporary concerns and issues in the doing of Indigenous business in Canada;
- Understanding and knowledge of Indigenous issues, norms and standards relevant to the promotion and protection of Indigenous women’s rights;
- Some knowledge of key issues impacting Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people in Canada and internationally; and
- Some understanding of social policy (including violence prevention and impacts, health, housing, etc.).

LANGUAGE

Fluency in English is essential. Preference will be given to bilingualism.
