Job Summary:

Working with the City of Mississauga's Recreation Team you will make a positive difference for a child and their family by assisting in creating a positive recreation day camp experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet participant at designated location each morning
  • Provide supervision and support to participant (412 years of age) in camp activities for the day
  • Provide verbal prompting for basic personal care as required (i.e. bathroom, changing and feeding needs)
  • Implement strategies on the Individual Recreation Plan as outlined
  • Advocate for the participant during activities to ensure group participation where possible
  • Monitor participant's participation in program and make additional modifications/ accommodations as needed
  • Facilitate friendships by encouraging social interactions between participant, other campers and staff
  • Ensure your participant feels welcome, safe and a sense of belonging with their group and within camp.
  • Manage various behaviours that may include ongoing physical aggression and verbal outbursts
  • Maintain open and honest communication with parents/caregivers, camp staff and supervisor(s) regarding the participants and their experience at camp
  • Prioritize preventative measures, problem solve and ask for assistance as required
  • Debrief with parents/caregivers each morning and at the end of each day clearly identifying areas of the day that went well and areas where behaviour management was necessary, ensuring parents receive a clear understanding of the day.
  • Provide assistance and support to camp leader in managing various behaviours within the group if required
  • Implement High Five principles
  • Provide feedback to supervisor to ensure continuous improvement of camp experiences for all
  • Facilitators must go in the water and stay within arms reach of their participants each day
  • Understand, communicate and incorporate policies and procedures of City of Mississauga as required
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Employees may be assigned to any location within Mississauga or redeployed to various locations/shifts or assigned a variety of job responsibilities on a daytoday basis.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Emergency or Standard First Aid with CPR B or C certification (must be recognized by WSIB) which must remain current during employment period.
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development certification.


Level
  • Vulnerable Sector Check to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted. This is a condition of employment.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities in a recreation setting/camp setting
  • Working towards Secondary School Graduation Diploma or Post-Secondary courses/degree/diploma in Education, Social Work, Child and Youth Work, Recreation and Leisure, Disability Studies, and/or related discipline.
  • BMS, NCVI, and/or training specific to autism spectrum disorder or similar training is an asset.
  • Light lifting required
  • Completion of a swimming test to determine supervision ability in the water
  • Willingness to learn and practice blocking techniques to address physical aggression and strategies to address verbal aggression.

Hourly Rate:

Staff will be paid minimum wage on an hourly basis for attending required trainings or meetings

Employment Period:


Summer Camps will run from July 2nd - August 30, 2024.Staff Training will be held prior to the start of Camps.


  • Summer Camp Training will be taking place in June.
**Training dates are mandatory as part of employment.
