We are looking for a professional like you to join our team As Manager of Public & Government Affairs, you will be an integral part of BASF’s North American Public and Government Affairs team, leading strategy development and execution related to public affairs engagement for BASF Agricultural Solutions in Canada. In this position, you will work closely with a diverse range of internal units to ensure the availability of BASF products in the Canadian market, enhance BASF’s reputation among public affairs stakeholders, and generally promote BASF’s Freedom-to-Operate.

 

As Manager of Public & Government Affairs, some of your responsibilities will include developing policy positions, public affairs engagement strategies, and related analyses to advance BASF business priorities on agricultural issues. As the successful candidate, you will be expected to use the full range of BASF public affairs tools, including direct engagement with federal and provincial government officials, to meet public policy objectives.

  • Develop and lead BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada public and government affairs strategy for key stakeholders and strategic topics, ensuring BASF’s Freedom-to-Operate.
  • Identify opportunities to advance BASF Canada AP public policy priorities at the Federal and Provincial levels.
  • Provide strategic direction on topics and processes such as stakeholder management, engagement planning and priority setting.
  • Work closely with Head of Communications & Industry Relations BASF Canada and BASF Corporate Government Affairs to promote BASF presence and brand awareness (in connection with BASF Canada AP Thought Leadership Strategy), coordinate public policy engagement and external communications related to Federal and Provincial government agencies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Marketing, Regulatory, Sustainability, and Technical Services to develop and implement strategies for promoting key products (crop protection, seeds, and digital).
  • Develop and grow an external network of direct and indirect influencers.
  • Provide thought and action leadership on future political trends and response strategies.
Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, political science, business administration, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably in the agriculture or agri-food industry.
  • Experience communicating about public policy issues to external stakeholders, including government officials.
  • Preferred direct experience working in a legislature or legislative committee, trade association, non-profit organization, corporate office or some combination of organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working on agricultural topics generally and an understanding of the specific Canadian policy landscape.  
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial government policies, processes, and stakeholders.
  • Established network of agricultural policy advocates, grower groups, and government officials.
  • Excellent analytical and research skills, including the ability to assess how policy proposals present opportunities or threats to businesses.
  • Strong relationship skills/capability in building and maintaining relationships with elected officials and partners.
  • Ability to present technical facts to knowledgeable specialized audiences and to persuade others to a point of view using facts.
