About Our Opportunity


As one of two (2) Summer Law Students, you will carry out special projects. You will observe and be involved in the work of the PPS, and you will assist with updating PPS policies.

Primary Accountabilities


You will be accountable for providing effective and efficient legal support to Crown attorneys by conducting research, preparing legal memoranda, assisting in the preparation of Crown submissions to Courts or tribunals, and assisting with victim/witness court preparation. You will be responsible for gathering and analyzing legal and non-legal information, and for drafting policy and procedure statements under lawyer supervision.

Qualifications and Experience


To be successful in this opportunity you have completed your first or second year of study at a recognized Canadian law school by the anticipated start date, be eligible to work in Canada, and be returning to your university law/J.D. program in the fall of 2024 or next applicable semester. Preference for students who have completed a course(s) in criminal law, constitutional law, evidence law, criminal procedure, or other related course work and/or post-secondary experience, and who are interested in learning about Canadian criminal law practice and procedure.
You have good analytical, organizational, and communication skills and are accurate and efficient, with the ability to multi-task. You work well both in individual settings and in team environments. You demonstrate high ethical standards and are committed to the principle of the rule of law. You have a keen attention to detail and the ability to trouble shoot issues when they arise. You have experience using computer applications (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and similar applications), and excellent writing skills.

Process


Stage 1 - Written application:

Stage 2 - Interviews:
Interviews will be offered to selected applicants.

Working Conditions


Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.

These are two (2) law student positions running from approximately May 6, 2024 to August 30, 2024.
