The Department of Public Works (DPW) offers University Students positions as an exciting environment to grow and develop their skills in a learning environment.

This is the right opportunity for you if you have an interest in issues related to maintaining and building safe provincial transportation systems and infrastructure. The Policy and Planning Division is responsible for providing support to the department through research, data collection, policy analysis, evaluation, and inter-department and intergovernmental relations. The Division is also the department’s link to the rest of government. Policy and Planning works to align DPW’s activities with government’s policies and priorities to help make decisions that are right for the province.

**About Our Opportunity**:
As a Policy and Planning Summer Student, you will be exposed to policy research and development, committee work, and will be engaged with colleagues in other divisions and departments.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
At DPW, your role will primarily support evidence-based and informed decision making related to the development of policy and legislation. Your responsibilities may include any or all of the following:

- conducting public policy research and critical analysis;
- analyzing statistics and data;
- conducting jurisdictional and literature reviews;
- reviewing legislation, regulations, and case law;
- developing questions to interview stakeholders and provincial and territorial counterparts;
- attending and reporting on stakeholder meetings;
- participating on working groups and collaborating with others; and
- presenting the results of your work in reports, briefing notes, and presentations to departmental staff.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
You must be currently enrolled as a student and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program). This opportunity is a perfect fit for students enrolled in a business administration or commerce program.

You must be able to demonstrate conceptual and analytical thinking to develop recommendations for complex policy issues. In addition, you should have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

**Working Conditions**:

- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day
- Typically located in a comfortable office environment
- Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about
- Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer
- May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy

There is one (1) opportunity available.

This opportunity will have an anticipated start date of May 1, 2023 and end date of September 1, 2023.

This position will be based out of the Johnston Building at 1672 Granville Street, Halifax.
