The Building Services Group at the Department of Public Works (PW) supports Nova Scotia’s 2,400 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings, correctional centres, and justice centres.

Without our infrastructure management group’s proactive measures, building issues or failures could lead to an interruption of government services provided.

**About Our Opportunity**:
As an Architecture Summer Student, you will gain practical experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified Architectural professionals.

We will provide you with all the required technical and protective equipment you need and, as a bonus, you get to keep the work boots we provide you when your summer work ends. We also offer opportunities to participate in training courses for safety.

Mileage and meals will be provided with sitework located outside of Halifax.

**Primary Accountabilities**:
Reporting to the Assistant Director of the technical engineering and design services at the infrastructure management branch, the applicant will be expected to carry out a variety of tasks relating to the delivery of building construction projects and assist with construction administration including:

- Assisting with coverage of various Architectural duties to help move and administrate projects under the guidance of a senior architect;
- Visiting existing buildings to determine issues within these buildings and to determine architectural solutions;
- Assisting the senior architect in developing the design;
- Assisting the senior architects in developing construction documents for these projects;
- Attending project meetings with internal staff as well as external consultants and contractors;
- Providing oversight for contracted work while ensuring quality, safety, and environmental standards are met and in accordance with Department standards, Acts and Regulations;
- Assisting with Tender and Request for Proposal development; and
- Completing work site inspections for various building projects throughout the area.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
You are a Bachelor of Architecture student, enrolled in the Architectural discipline and returning to school for the fall semester (or in the next applicable semester for the education program). Travel throughout the province may be required. You demonstrate a keen interest in building construction and maintenance activities and are a self-starter. You have strong communication skills and are comfortable with both team and individual work settings.

**Professional Skills**

Good working knowledge of MS Office suite & Autodesk AutoCAD or Revit

The following are considered assets including:

- Some familiarity with the Nova Scotia Building Code and various codes and standards;
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act; and
- Familiarity with contract specifications.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

**Working Conditions**:

- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day.
- Typically located in a comfortable office environment.
- Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
- Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
- May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.
- May require occasional visits to work sites or provincial offices.

**Additional Information**:
There is one (1) position available in Halifax.

This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2023 with an end date of September 1, 2023.
