Vancouver BC, Canada BC Community Alliance Full time

Role: Finance Coordinator

Status: Temporary, Part-time (30 hours/week)

Location: Vancouver, BC - Remote

This position is available as a part of the Canada Summer Jobs Placement program. Successful candidates must be 30 or younger, and a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident to be eligible for hire.

Who we are

The BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is a local Black-led, community-based, organization, formed in 2019 and registered as a non-profit in 2020, dedicated to addressing the structural inequities created by racism, especially anti-Black racism, within education settings in British Columbia. The organization was born out of a crisis in our community, following a racist bomb threat at a Vancouver high school, Lord Byng Secondary, and recognizing the broad harm that occurred not only to Black students in the school but also felt within the broader community, especially other Black community members.

Although the 'Lord Byng incident' was a foundational moment in the formation of the BC Community Alliance, we are more accurately understood as a response to the racism that is felt by many racialized students.

Who we’re looking for

BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Finance Coordinator to join our team. This role is essential in supporting the growth and maintenance of our organizational finance practices by assisting with financial operations, ensuring accuracy in financial transactions, and contributing to the overall financial health of BCCA. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

What you’ll do

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in accordance with organizational policies and procedures - including income, expenses, donations, grants and budgets
  • Assist in the preparation, monitoring and management of BCCA’s annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and available resources
  • Support the administration of grants received by the organization, including proposal development, budgeting, compliance and reporting
  • Manage BCCA’s bank accounts, including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and AR/AP and payroll activities, ensuring accurate and timely transactions
  • Develop, implement and maintain financial policies, procedures and controls to safeguard the oirganization’s assets, ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and promote transparency and accountability
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements for nonprofit organizations, including filing annual tax returns and other necessary forms
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and improve efficiency
  • Collaborate with team members to implement process improvements and best practices
  • Continuously seek ways to enhance the accuracy, timeliness, and effectiveness of financial operations
  • Other duties as assigned

What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in finance, accounting, or a related field
  • Proficiency in financial software and Payroll tools, such as QuickBooks, Excel, Wagepoint and ERP systems
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and generate insights
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and analysis
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and integrity in handling financial information

What we offer

  • 30 hours per week at $30.00/hour - approx. 9 week duration
  • The opportunity to collaborate with a fun, passionate and growing team

Don’t meet all the requirements but still interested in applying for this opportunity? We’re all on a journey to learn constantly and have areas to grow in and develop. If you bring some of the above skills to the table and are still developing in others, please apply with us anyway Learning and experience isn’t a one-way path, if you believe you have the background needed to make an impact in this role, we’d love to hear from you.

BCCA is strengthened by diversity. We are committed to achieving a workplace that is equitable and representative of Canada’s diverse Black population. As a Black-led and founded organization, we aim to have our core roles represented by this community. We actively work to attract, develop, and retain employees from diverse and equity-deserving backgrounds who have exceptional ability and the desire to make a difference. We continuously strive to support individual needs and differences in a work environment that is built on inclusivity and respect for everyone.

If you require accommodations in completing an application, interviewing, or otherwise participating in our hiring process for any reason, please direct your questions to careers@bccommunityalliance.ca and we’ll be happy to support you.
