Position Details Posting Summary Position Title Student Research Assistant Faculty/Department Faculty of Arts Unit Arts-Journalism Employee Group CUPE 2419 CUPE 5791 Job Family Category Student Number of Vacancies 6 Position Summary Student Research Assistants are sought to assist university-based researchers and their media partners in developing research-based journalism investigations and feature stories for broadcast and print.

We seek enterprising researchers who have a keen interest in investigative journalism, data journalism and solutions journalism.

Duties will include:
  • Examination of Canadian government legislation and documents;
  • Submitting and tracking FOI requests;
  • Database analysis;
  • Outreach to community members;
  • Writing story drafts; and
  • Assisting the research needs and journalism work of the project.
  • Mentorship, skills development opportunities, and appropriate research and/or byline credit for project publications provided.
Position Requirements
  • Current or graduating student at an accredited post-secondary Canadian journalism and/or communications program.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous issues and cultural contexts is a strong asset.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Remote work options are available, but students must be based in Canada and eligible to work in Canada.
  • Successful applicants may potentially integrate this position with a for-credit internship from your home institution, contingent on agreement between the research lead and your program head.
