Primary Purpose: To secure and promote deferred gifts to the University of Saskatchewan by obtaining philanthropic support from donors, alumni, and prospects with the goal of increasing long-term financial support for the university. The incumbent will develop and cultivate relationships with a portfolio of donors and prospective donors to arrange deferred gifts and support the planning, development, implementation, and management of deferred giving at the University of Saskatchewan.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director, Legacy Giving, the Development Officer fosters relationships with key internal and external legacy giving stakeholders who wish to support the University of Saskatchewan. This position promotes, secures, and arranges deferred giving opportunities and works in collaboration with faculty and staff across the university, meets the needs of donors and prospective donors, upholds the legal, financial, and social accountabilities of the institution in all deferred gift administration, and advances the existing development, marketing, implementation, administration, and evaluation of deferred giving activities and programming. This position understands and applies fundraising principles to identify, cultivate, and secure deferred expectancies. Considerable discretion is required as this position is privy to, and works with sensitive, confidential information.

As an ambassador of the university working in alignment with university fundraising policies and procedures and Canada Revenue Agency legislation, as well as ethical principles and standards, this position independently interacts directly with senior representatives of the university, colleges, schools, units, University Relations colleagues, and professional advisors to promote and secure deferred gifts to the University of Saskatchewan to meet stated fundraising objectives. Travel and evening and weekend work is required. This position will endorse and embrace diversity, innovation, partnerships, and collective action. Consequence of error is significant to the reputation and profile of the university.

Accountabilities:

Promote, secure, and arrange deferred gifts to support the University of Saskatchewan by actively managing a portfolio of prospects and donors. Provide expertise to both internal and external stakeholders on deferred giving opportunities including responding to donor inquiries, coordinating with staff and faculty, and supporting professional advisors by responding to their requests for specific information on behalf of their clients. Execute gift arrangements with donors and/or their professional advisors for deferred, major, or blended gifts. Support the acknowledgment, administration, and stewardship of realized deferred gifts. Ensure donors who have committed a future gift to the university are recognized and stewarded in a manner fitting the personal and unique nature of their gift. This includes supporting the USask deferred giving recognition program, Greystone Circle. Ensure contacts with donors and prospective donors are recorded in the university alumni and donor database in a timely and accurate manner. Participate in development training, University Relations meetings, team planning and other activities that contribute to achieving university-wide goals in development, communication, and alumni relations. Keep up to date with fundraising methods, philanthropic trends, and government tax laws.

Education:

A relevant postsecondary degree and appropriate education and experience in a related field. Completion of the Canadian Gift Planning Course offered through the Canadian Association of Gift Planners/Association Canadienne des Professionnels en Dons Planifiés (CAGP*ACPDP) or membership in CAGP*ACPDP would be considered an asset. A recognized professional accreditation such as CFRE would also be considered an asset.

Experience:

Three to five years of fundraising experience with progression in level of responsibility. Financial and estate planning knowledge pertaining to the Canada Revenue Agency guidelines concerning charitable donations is preferred. Demonstrated experience in fundraising program development, implementation and evaluation. Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan’s mission, culture, goals, and stakeholders would be an asset.

Skills:

A strong orientation to donor centered fundraising and effective planning and organizational skills including the ability to set goals and objectives and manage multiple projects from conception to completion within prescribed timelines. Demonstrated ability to identify target audiences and create engagement and awareness as well as gift planning fundraising strategies, culminating in an increase in secured gift planning support. Highly effective interpersonal skills including tact with enthusiastic professionalism in dealing with people. Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal. Highly motivated, results oriented, creative and reliable. Proven ability to work independently, collaboratively and as a highly effective team member and to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and partners. Demonstrated sound judgment and diplomacy, consensus building skills, attention to detail, accuracy and confidentiality. Experience and capability to anticipate, strategize, and respond to changing fundraising trends. Effective public speaking, presentation, facilitation and negotiation skills. Ability to take initiative and make effective decisions; organizational and analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to balance a demanding workload, multitask and adjust to changing priorities. Proficient in computer applications including MS Office and Blackbaud CRM an asset.
