Alberta Health Services (AHS) has an exciting opportunity in the Integrated Quality Management (IQM) Portfolio as a Clinical Safety Leader (CSL) based in Edmonton, Alberta. The CSL is part of the Patient Safety team within the IQM portfolio supporting the Edmonton Zone clinical safety program and quality assurance activities by providing ongoing leadership in advancing a patient safety culture. This position has the opportunity to work in a diverse range of healthcare environments, and with staff, medical staff, and leaders at all levels of the organization. Reporting to the Manager, Quality and Patient Safety, the CSL plays a pivotal role in advancing patient safety culture for their assigned operational site/program(s). The CSL coordinates patient safety management within the portfolio, while promoting a just culture and learning with an aim of increased reporting related to patient safety issues. In addition, CSLs act as a link between staff (reporters), the Reporting and Learning System for Patient Safety (RLS) and operational leaders. The CSL will support the activities of the Quality Assurance Committees. In this regard, CSLs utilize their healthcare backgrounds/experience and their expert patient safety knowledge to lead complex interdisciplinary investigations.

Description:

Reporting to the Manager, Quality and Patient Safety, the CSL plays a pivotal role in advancing patient safety culture in the Edmonton Zone. This position is responsible for:Monitoring emerging trends and current safety data to advise leaders on taking proactive measures to prevent patient harm. Provides support and consultative services in response to clinically adverse events.Reviews RLS with respect to analysis and prioritization of the issues that arise.Coordinate patient safety management while promoting a just culture and learning with an aim of increased reporting related to patient safety issues.Support the activities of Quality Assurance Committees including providing mentorship and support to the chair(s), conducting quality assurance reviews in collaboration with site leadership, and reviewing RLS reports, and additional data sources to identify patient safety trends.Other duties may include participation in the building of capacity for continuous learning and improvement (Quality Management Framework) and contribute to the creation of safe and reliable processes.

Experience and skills in group facilitation techniques including of multidisciplinary teams of various sizes. Ability to research, monitor, and analyze data for use in decision-making and recommendations. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Must be able to work in multiple work settings in person and virtually ( acute care site, administrative sites, rural sites). Proficiency with computer skills in Microsoft Office suite ( Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Connect Care. Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision. Well-developed critical thinking skills and ability to problem-solve. Demonstrated ability to lead change in a complex environment based on sound principles, such as PROSCI, Institute of HealthCare Improvement (IHI) and Alberta Improvement Way (AIW). Demonstrated, comfort with decision making responsibilities and the ability to inspire and build confidence. Flexibility to work in a complex, multi-disciplinary changing environment managing multiple priorities and expectations. Extensive knowledge of the evidence-based practice, accreditation principles, quality and safety methodologies, and knowledge translation to improve patient care and the health care system.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in clinical field, business or healthcare administration.
