What you’ll do

Schedules patient appointments and books follow-up appointments, ensuring appropriate date, time and location are provided. Adjusts arrangements in accordance with patient and departmental requirements. Screens referrals received in the department for necessary information according to departmental requirements and criteria identified by the program. Gathers additional information as necessary by phoning either the referral source or the patient. Enters patient demographics and other relevant information into departmental database and generates intake form from database. Processes patient registrations by documenting and/or collecting patient information on registration forms. Receives patients upon arrival into the area, ensures patient demographics are accurate by confirming with the patient or guardian and advises appropriate professional that the patient has arrived. Files completed and accurate forms once the above information is obtained. Processes accepted referrals as directed by staff by entering and sending out patient questionnaires, booking appointments. Maintains computerized list of patients re-directed to the community by keeping updated records in the patient database. Retrieves and returns charts to Health Records as required.

Grade 12 and two year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills & Knowledge 

Ability to keyboard at 45 wpm. Knowledge of medical terminology. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to organize work. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Ability to deal with others effectively. Ability to operate related equipment. Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents – including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study – and how they intersect across the health care system. Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).  As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
