Winnipeg, Canada People First HR Services Full time
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) stands as a groundbreaking institution in Winnipeg, the first museum in the world devoted exclusively to the exploration and celebration of human rights. It represents not just a physical space but a commitment to the idea that respect and understanding of human rights are fundamental forces for positive change globally.

In their pursuit of ongoing innovation and commitment, CMHR is now seeking their next Director, Public Affairs.

As a cornerstone of CMHR’s mission, the Director, Public Affairs is an important role responsible for driving the museum's communications and marketing efforts. This position is central to promoting the museum's exhibits, educational programs, public events, and overall brand, ensuring alignment with the museum's strategic vision.

As the Director, you will lead the development and execution of strategic communications and marketing initiatives that highlight the museum’s offerings and achievements. Reporting to the Vice President, Education and Public Affairs, you will manage a diverse team of professionals, including issues management, government relations, communications, social media, marketing, translation, and administrative staff. The role involves creating comprehensive communication plans, annual marketing strategies, and social media initiatives that align with the museum's goals. The Director will also provide strategic guidance to the broader leadership team.

Position Overview: Develop and execute comprehensive communication and marketing strategies that align with the museum's mission and goals and in collaboration with the museum’s leadership team. Provide leadership and mentorship to a diverse team of professionals, encouraging collaboration and ensuring an inclusive, and equitable workplace. Provide budget management for the public affairs department, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and efficiently to meet strategic objectives. Direct the creation of high-quality content across various platforms, ensuring all communications are consistent with the museum's brand and strategic plan. Lead earned and paid media efforts with a focus on building national reach and connecting directly with communities. Provide strategic communications advice on government, stakeholder and community relations. Build and maintain relationships with external partners to promote the museum's activities and enhance its visibility and impact. This includes collaborating with tourism and cultural organizations and other human rights institutions to support joint initiatives and campaigns.
Ideal Qualifications: Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field, coupled with at least seven years of relevant experience. Extensive experience in issues management, media relations, strategic communications planning, and social media management. Proven ability to develop and implement successful marketing campaigns and work effectively with marketing agencies. Strong leadership skills with experience managing diverse and multi-disciplinary teams. Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey a clear vision and build relationships at all levels. Bilingual proficiency in both official languages is preferred, especially for engaging with francophone media and stakeholders. Strong alignment with human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion, and dignity for all. Ability to infuse these principles into partnerships, programming, and team culture.
About the Canadian Museum for Human Rights
At its core, CMHR's mandate is to delve into the complex subject of human rights, with a focus that spans but is not limited to the Canadian context. The museum is dedicated to enhancing public understanding of human rights, fostering respect for others, and stimulating reflective dialogue. This commitment extends beyond mere exhibition but serves as a catalyst for introspection and conversation about human rights.

As one of Canada’s national museums, CMHR plays a vital role in preserving and promoting Canadian heritage, both domestically and internationally. It contributes significantly to the collective memory and identity of Canadians, serving as a wellspring of inspiration, research, learning, and entertainment.

In alignment with its national status, the museum provides essential services to Canadian culture in both official languages, ensuring its accessibility and relevance to all.
