The Opportunity

The Engineering department has an exciting opportunity for a Casual Traffic Signal Technician to join our Development Engineering team.

Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor and working with another Traffic Signal Technician, this position helps to ensure the dependability and functionality of traffic signal controls and streetlighting for efficient vehicle flow and public safety on city roadways. The key responsibility of this position will be to perform necessary signal infrastructure locates and support management and response documentation of all locate requests and will also coordinate and collaborate with the Traffic Signals & Signs Department staff as a lead technical support and trainer for staff on basic response actions to signal “call outs”.

In addition to those critical tasks this position will help in responding to traffic control “call-outs” to perform site inspections, trouble-shoot and take necessary repair action.

This position will act as support to additional transportation programs, such as Intelligent Transportation Systems, traffic data collection, and the completion of warrant processes for upgrades to the city’s transportation network.

The role requires excellent time management and organization skills, combined with well-developed interpersonal and communications skills. This position will draw on your ability to build strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. The role is well suited for someone who is confident and able to work independently on many tasks.

Qualifications

•Completion of a 2 year Civil or Electrical Engineering Diploma
•Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in a traffic control system maintenance environment.
•International Municipal Signal Association Signals Level 2 Certification in Construction and Field.
•Membership in a professional organization such as ASET or IMSA would be advantageous.
•Strong computer skills and proficiency using the Microsoft Office (Excel/Word/Access), Central Monitoring Systems (Centracs) and GIS applications preferred.
•Valid Class 5 Drivers License and a personal vehicle for work use is required including a clear drivers abstract showing fewer than 5 demerits.

Hours of Work

This is a casual position that will work approximately 36 hours per week. The incumbent will need to occasionally work outside normal office hours during construction season.

Compensation

Starting at $38.66 per Hour based on qualifications and experience. This position does not include benefits.

Term

Six-month duration with possibility of extension.

Conditions of Employment

The successful applicant will be required to obtain a satisfactory police information check. Valid Class 5 Drivers License and a personal vehicle for work use is required including a clear drivers abstract showing fewer than 5 demerits. The successful candidate will be required to provide proof of educational and professional credentials.
