JOB SUMMARY: The type 3 Wildfire fighter Crew leader oversees and guides a crew of firefighters while fighting a wildfire. The Crew leader ensures that their crew is working safely and effectively through the duration of the contract, maintains appropriate communications with all supervisory personnel, and ensures that fires are effectively contained and/or extinguished. Firefighting is typically a seasonal (summer) contract that depends on the number and severity of threatening wildfires.

Spectrum provides all the gear for camp deployments, including sleeping bag, sleeping pad and tent. We also provide a fireline pack for your day bag.

Responsible of a 5-person fire crew, including but not limited to:

Ensuring crew safety,

Guiding new crew members through varying conditions and terrain,

Ensuring appropriate PPE and equipment is available for self and crew.

Extinguish residual fire, including but not limited to breaking apart smoldering debris, extinguishing embers, or small flames, and moving burned debris so it.

Moving burned debris so it cannot reignite.

Operate trucks and ATVs.

Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright and Wright Canada Holdings culture of safety and employee ownership.

Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures.

Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

S100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety (or equivalent)

S185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance.

S212 Fire Line Communications

S230 Introduction to Supervision (Crew boss)

S235 Burnoff and Backfiring

ICS 100 (Incident Command System)

Transportation of Dangerous Goods

Acted as a Crew Leader on three (3) fires OR twenty (20) days as a fire fighter (minimum 240 hours required)

Annual Physical Fitness Test—Moderate Standard

PREFFERED CERTIFICATIONS:

OFA Level 1 with Transportation Endorsement

Chainsaw or Power Saw operator

Wildland Fire Safety Danger Tree Assessor

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Valid British Columbia Class 5 Driver’s License and a current Driver’s Abstract.

Ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions and work.

Work well alone and with others.

Possesses the ability to lift, move, and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis and up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis.

Organization of equipment before, during and after shifts will be requires.

Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Must be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work tasks such as rain, heat, sun, cold, snow.

Must be able to write, read, and comprehend written and verbal job instructions/information.

Must be able to communicate with others and represent Spectrum Resource Group in a professional manner.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS : Employees will be exposed to the elements and will be working in various weather conditions. Temperatures can range from extreme heat to cool and rainy conditions, air quality can be greatly affected by wildfires (smoke, ash, dust etc.). Employees can be exposed to a wide variety of shift types; from 10 day long shifts on with 4 days off; 14-day long shifts; or even on an as-needed, on-call basis. The terrain can be quite challenging at times as well as very remote, and air quality surrounding wildfires is often very poor.

LIVING CONDITIONS: Work time will be spent at the location of a wildfire, which will result in employees travelling to different areas in B.C and Alberta. Accommodations can consist of hotels & motels, campsites, trailers, or logging camps. Because this is a field position, you will be spending most of your time in the field and often, away from home. Office time will be minimal. When staying in a remote camp, everybody is expected to pitch in and make camp life better for the whole crew.
