Coordinator – Student Life

Primary Purpose: The Coordinator, Student Life (Coordinator) is a live-in role and is responsible for all aspects of Student Life in their assigned area of Residence, including student staff management (coaching, support, and discipline), student support (crisis, conduct, and conflict management/resolution), programming delivery, and community oversight. Centered on principles of holistic student development and inclusivity, Coordinators work towards student success and community within Residence, while meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. This work includes continuous conduct follow-up, advising on and coordination of support efforts, and continued assessment of risk for both students and the community.

Nature of Work: The unique elements of this role include:

A requirement to live in Residence: this refers to living in a furnished apartment located in the Residence complex for which the Coordinator is responsible, and necessitates an understanding and acceptance of not only the benefits of this arrangement but also the challenges of living in the midst of a student environment and the requirement to self-manage any resulting stressors over time A requirement to be available outside of regular work hours and to be flexible in this pursuit: in particular, this role involves partaking in a 24/7 on-call rotation that sees Coordinators responding to issues such as student crises or staff troubleshooting after-hours - responses can vary from a week requiring minor phone responses to overnight work involving multiple cases and immediate documentation; every effort is made to support those on-Call through consultation, check-ins, and time in lieu - however, it is imperative candidates understand that this unique demand involves grace under pressure, resilience, and stamina in both the short and long-term A requirement to adhere to and sometimes respond unpredictably to a schedule involving standard work hours balanced with multiple peak or blackout periods (where weekends or evenings may be required for a duration of time, vacations may not be taken, or additional hours may be needed); while every effort is made to ensure equal flexibility and time is returned in a structured give-and-take system, it is again necessary that candidates recognize the intensive workload and collaboration required in this environment and are prepared to work openly and cooperatively while being responsible for and communicating openly regarding any associated personal needs.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

Supporting Students Responds to emergency situations and student crisis in a timely manner with appropriate levels of communication, consultation and referral Responds – through RAs or personal contact, coaching, or investigative discussion – to students in distress, conflict, or engaging in disruptive behaviors (conduct violations) Practices a high level of accountability around student follow-up, record-keeping and reporting Review student updates and reports and follow up as appropriate Works to create an inclusive community founded on principles of equity and an appreciation of diversity Designs, facilitates and assesses student development programming based on shifting student needs Promotes and enforces adherence to Residence and University policies Supporting Student Staff Recruits and hires student staff Manages and coaches staff, including overseeing disciplinary processes, and meeting regularly with all levels of staff; serves as a role model and mentor to student leaders Develops and/or assists in the execution of training initiatives, leadership development, and professional development opportunities for student leaders Supporting Management and the Coordinator Team Functions cooperatively and autonomously, develops priorities based on the goals of the unit Collaborates with colleagues, student staff, and students by working to actively contribute to team situations, communicating with respect and actively working to reduce and resolve conflict Supports departmental policy and process Supporting Residence and the University Works to build collaborative relationships and partnerships on campus and in the community, especially with services offering student and departmental support Works to promote and support Residence and University goals and initiatives
Respect the confidential nature of the position and treats information accordingly

Education: Undergraduate degree is required. Relevant area of study will be considered an asset.

Experience: Resident Assistant experience is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have held Senior Resident Assistant roles and/or other applicable post-secondary/Student Affairs/Residence-related roles. An equivalent combination of education and, particularly, applicable work experience along with some previous Residence experience (must have at least lived in a post-secondary Residence setting) with other residence employment or leadership experience is considered an asset.

Skills: Demonstrated experience in the areas of student leadership, student development, crisis response, and support.
