The Church in Mission Unit is seeking individuals to fill the role of Climate Motivators as part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program for 2024. This is an 8-week program at 35 hours per week with an anticipated start date in the first week of July.

The work of the Climate Motivators will include liaising with a local community of faith (could be a camp, regional office, etc.), team meetings, leadership development, action planning for local context, advocacy to align United Church policies with climate commitments, and advocating for climate justice with MP in local ridings.

This term employment will include training, leadership development, education, living in community, and group action planning. Two weeks of the summer program will be in residence together at a location to be determined. The Motivators will, at times, work remotely and will need capacity for online communication and learning. Supervision for the position(s) will be carried out by The GO Project in partnership with the General Council Office.

In order to complete an application, each applicant must be sponsored by a local community of faith who appoints a local mentor. This community of faith and mentor will help the Motivator to identify local climate priorities, projects, connections, activists, and government officials.

There are five main goals for the Climate Motivator Program:

Engage in climate education and advocacy Leadership development and engagement with the Moderator Vocational discernment Engage with Indigenous, ecumenical and global climate activists Participate in spiritual/faith practices that celebrate/are informed by Indigenous wisdom, and that explore intersections between ecological justice, social justice, and deepen eco-spirituality

Activities and Responsibilities:

Motivators will be responsible for submitting all employment paperwork and reading any necessary training materials at the beginning of their employment; Motivators will connect with other young people across the church who are engaging in leadership and decision-making related to climate justice and advocacy and will work together to plan service and learning activities, as well as opportunities for worship and spiritual practice; Motivators will learn skills in community assessment and engagement such as team building, community meetings, and launching neighbourhood-based projects with other community groups; Motivators will attend an online training at the beginning of the summer, and then fulfill the rest of their summer contract through remote work, in a local setting, and in a communal on-site setting working on action plans, community engagement, program development and more; Motivators will learn about the ministry of the United Church in the area of climate justice and eco-theology, work with their cohort to develop a project, resource, or action plan on their chosen theme and communicate their project, resource, or plan to others in the church; At the end of the program, Motivators will participate in a debrief that will include: A full review of the summer – all activities, projects, and decisions made; Affirmation of work done, learnings made, and courage shown; Feedback on the continuation of the position and program for future.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must:

Be between the ages of 15-21 Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations Have a sponsoring community of faith and mentor Have a government-issued ID acceptable for travel documentation Be passionate about climate activism and care of Creation

Compensation

Salary will be at $21.13 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
