The Career Development Specialist, with a focus on the skilled trades, plays a vital role in assisting students and graduates in the trades sector with their career development and employment goals. Reporting to the Associate Director of Career Services and Corporate Development, this position involves providing tailored guidance, resources, and support to individuals pursuing careers in trades.


This position is on-site at the campus in North York, Ontario.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:


Career Development

  1. Collaborate with students and graduates in the trades sector to identify career goals and develop personalized employment strategies.
  2. Assist with professional document preparation, including resumes, cover letters, and portfolios, tailored to trade-specific roles.
  3. Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions to enhance job search skills, interview preparation, and networking strategies.
  4. Research and curate trade-specific job and internship opportunities, matching candidates' skills and interests.
  5. Utilize a CRM system to track and document communication and progress with students and graduates.
  6. Organize and facilitate workshops and seminars focused on trades-related topics such as job search techniques, industry trends, and professional development.
  7. Establish and maintain partnerships with trade organizations, unions, employers, and industry professionals to expand job opportunities and resources.
  8. Provide ongoing support and guidance to students and graduates throughout their career development journey, from enrollment to employment.
  9. Collaborate with academic departments to integrate career development activities into the curriculum and classroom experience.
  10. Stay informed about trends and developments in the trades industry to provide relevant and up-to-date career advice and resources.
  11. Assist in organizing and participating in career fairs, industry events, and networking opportunities for trades students and graduates.
  12. Support the Career Services team in achieving departmental goals and objectives.


FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Understanding of the trades industry, including various sectors such as construction, network cabling, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Ability to provide tailored career guidance and support to individuals pursuing trades careers.
  • Proficiency in professional document preparation and job search techniques specific to the trades sector.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, graduates, employers, and industry professionals.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems for tracking and managing student interactions and employment outcomes.
  • Commitment to staying informed about industry trends, job market demands, and emerging opportunities in the trades field.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience working in career services, workforce development, or a related field, with a focus on trades preferred.
  • Knowledge of trade-specific certifications, licensing requirements, and career pathways.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in career services, workforce development, or a related field, preferably with a focus on trades.
  • Must be willing to work on site from the Toronto Campus (11 Kodiak crescent) and willing to travel when needed to the Cambridge Campus (45 Commerce Ct).
  • Proven track record in a results-driven environment and experience with meeting targets.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communications skills.
  • Strong detail orientation, time management, and ability to multi-task in order to meet deadlines and achieve targets and objectives.
  • Experience with community outreach and developing relationships with employers considered an asset.
