Board Member with Financial Expertise – Volunteer Opportunity

At McLaren Housing Society (MHS), we provide safe, secure, and affordable housing with compassionate support for individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS who are homeless or inadequately housed. Our mission is to improve health, wellness, independent living, and community connection for those we serve.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced board member with a strong financial background to join our volunteer Board of Directors. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your financial and strategic expertise to help guide an organization that currently provides housing and rent support to over 319 people living with HIV/AIDS across Metro Vancouver.

Your leadership will help ensure financial sustainability, sound governance, and the continued delivery of life-changing programs and supports.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Financial management, accounting, or auditing
  • Budget oversight, financial reporting, or investment management
  • Governance-level understanding of nonprofit finance
    , including experience as Treasurer or on a Finance or Audit Committee
  • Knowledge of public sector or nonprofit funding
    , including experience with BC Housing, BC Gaming, or similar funders
  • Familiarity with the nonprofit housing sector
    or community-based organizations
  • CPA designation
    or equivalent experience is considered an asset

An understanding of the HIV/AIDS community and awareness of LGBTQ2+ issues are also valued.

Board Member Roles and Expectations

  • Serve as a thoughtful and engaged member of the Board, helping to safeguard the organization's financial health and strategic direction
  • Review and provide oversight on monthly financial statements and annual budgets
  • Participate in Finance and Audit Committee meetings
  • Regularly attend all board meetings (approximately 11 per year)
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing reports and financials in advance
  • Participate in fundraising and donor stewardship activities as appropriate
  • Commit to learning and advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in governance
  • Make a personal annual financial contribution to the Society at a level meaningful to you

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 2–3 hours per month for board meetings (plus preparation time)
  • 4–6 hours per month for committee work, onboarding, and training
  • Three-year term, with the hope that members will serve their full term
