Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Manager, Practice, Clinical Performance & Patient Safety is currently seeking a temporary-full time Clinical Educator. The purpose of the position is to promote a culture of respect, continuous learning, practice improvement and professional development.

Please Note: This position offers a hybrid work environment consisting of in-office and remote work. Office location is 500 Church St in Penetanguishene, ON

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop practice supports, including competency profiles and evaluations, policy/procedure and related documents, education and performance support materials to enable staff members to meet regulatory and other practice standards.
  • Conduct practice related learning needs assessments, determines priorities and recommends strategies, learning goals and objectives to meet identified needs. Assists with the transition of new hires at Waypoint including development and delivery of corporate clinical orientation programs.
  • Conduct practice related performance audits and works with program management and direct service staff to support continuous practice improvement.
  • Designs, implements and delivers specialized educational events/programs (e.g. orientation, refreshers, etc) based on the principles of adult learning for Waypoint staff, students, community agencies and the general public, designed to meet the identified learning needs through methods such as lectures, audit tools, one-on-one sessions, group facilitation, recommended readings, self-learning packages, e-learning, poster displays, and conferences.
  • Evaluate results of educational programs by developing evaluative criteria and using effective measurement techniques; developing and incorporating revisions to programs as results indicate.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership team, Waypoint's clinical and support programs and Professional Practice Leaders in support of initiatives and issues related to clinical practice and patient safety; leads and actively participates in internal and external workgroups, projects and other initiatives and committees contributing to mental health care and Waypoint's vision, mission and values.
  • Facilitate Code Reviews for the purpose of ensuring safety for both client and staff, including providing technical and functional advice to the team, interpreting current Waypoint policies and recommending changes to these policies to enhance patient care.
  • Provide service as a professional practice consultant, guide, resource and/or mentor for individuals, groups and programs including on matters relating to standards of care, clinical practice guidelines and protocols.
  • Facilitate and participates in the development, maintenance and review of program wide, evidence informed practice support documents.
  • Participate in continuing education for self-development and maintains competence in clinical practice and promotes individual accountability for life-long learning and professional development; Monitors trends and issues in health care as they relate to clinical practice.
  • Maintain current knowledge of evidence informed and leading practices in mental health and updates practice according to current leading practices; leads and participates in research activities related to application of theory to practice.
  • Contribute to a safe, therapeutic environment through awareness of the Regulatory college standards, program/facility-wide policies and procedures and mandatory training, i.e., implementing practices related to patient safety, utilizing safe practices to address agitated patients; maintaining a safe environment by the secure storage of hazardous or dangerous equipment and supplies; undertaking established security protocols; environment searches, maintaining a locked environment when applicable; participating in the physical restraint of a violent or potentially violent patient as required. Participating as an emergency responder in announced Code White (psychiatric emergency) and Code Blue (medical emergency) situations.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In good standing with applicable Regulatory college or applicable professional association (e.g. College of Nurses of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, Therapeutic Recreation Ontario).
  • Bachelor's Degree in a health discipline field is required.
  • 5 Minimum of five years of mental health care experience with related professional practice leadership experience. Experience in forensic mental health experience preferred.
  • Preference for those holding a Teaching and Training Adults certificate or related education.
  • Preference for Specialty certification in Mental Health care, with additional preference for certification in venous access, complex wound care for Nursing candidates.
  • Experience with mental health theory and practice, physical health assessment and chronic disease management, appropriate to professional designation, clinical research methodology, survey methodology, evaluation criteria, collecting and analyzing data, and interpreting/comparing results in order to conduct needs assessment and assess the effectiveness of services/programs being offered.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Regulated Health Professionals Act, Criminal Code, the Mental Health Act, Consent and Capacity Act, Substitute Decisions Acts etc. Regulatory College standards and guidelines
  • Ability to adhere to principles and practices of adult education and program design and evaluation, along with risk management and security practices and policies in order to deliver programs regarding secure settings;
  • Experience working in patient safety in-hospital programs relevant to their work environment, policies and processes and active participation in program-based initiatives focused on enhancing patient safety;
  • Excellent computer software in order to develop education programs, overheads, input and analyze statistical data, develop reports, policies and procedures, charts and diagram, etc.

  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
