Whistler, British Columbia, Canada Coastal Mountain Excavations Full time $60,000 - $120,000 per year

As Heavy Equipment Operator, you safely operate articulated rock truck, backhoe, dozer, excavator, and loader for land clearing, building excavations, utilities and road construction activities. You excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials. You are also responsible for the basic maintenance of equipment, safety around equipment, and the compliance of markers, grades, and stakes. The Heavy Equipment Operator must perform all work to regulated organizational, as well as provincial and federal standards and procedures and adhere to the highest standards of safety.

Qualifications

· Valid Class 5 BC Drivers' Licence

· Grade 12 diploma

· College or industry courses in heavy equipment operating an asset

· Trade or Red Seal certification an asset

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

TheHeavy Equipment Operatorwill demonstrate the following abilities in their daily work:

· Minimum required machine operating time for one or more endorsements below:

o Articulated Rock Truck – 300 hours

o Backhoe – 300 hours

o Dozer – 300 hours

o Excavator – 600 hours

o Loader – 450 hours

and experience performing generic skills and job tasks as outlined in the career development pathway.

· Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of safety requirements on job sites including basic requirements for personal protection, safe equipment operations and maintenance

· Demonstrates functional knowledge of heavy equipment uses and their drive and hydraulic systems

· Demonstrates basic operating techniques including prestart checks of a machine's hardware (frame, body panels, tires or tracks, and safety equipment), driveline components, hydraulic system components, electrical components and controls

· Displays understanding how to safely start, move, steer, stop, and shut down different machine types

· Demonstrates understanding of duties and responsibilities of the operator, safety rules for operation, the attachment of implements, and basic preventive maintenance practices

· Demonstrates broad understanding to the process of planning and executing earth moving activities on various types of construction projects

· Demonstrates broad understanding of the concept of preparing graded surfaces using heavy equipment including identification of construction stakes and interpretation of marks on each type of stake and the process for grading slopes

· Physically demanding

(i) Frequently rotating (right/left) – check/see mirrors, blind spots

(ii) Eye/hand and eye/hand foot coordination

(iii) Repeating the same movement – body rotation, feet and hand controls

(iv) Gripping and reaching

(v) Sitting for long periods of time

(vi) Climbing – stairs/ladders; getting in and out of equipment

· Customer service skills including the ability to communicate effectively with the general public

· Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with other Snow Services and Coastal Mountain Excavations employees

Heavy Equipment Operator - Level 2

All skills, knowledge, and abilities of the Heavy Equipment Operator plus:

· Minimum 3 years or 3000 hours operating experience on excavator or backhoe

· Experience with backfilling, demolition, ditching, excavating, land clearing, trenching, stock piling, material handling

· Problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, job task planning and organizing

Heavy Equipment Operator – level 1

All skills, knowledge, and abilities of the Heavy Equipment Operator 2 plus:

  • Minimum 5 years or 5000 hours operating experience on excavator
  • Expert level proficiency
  • Facilitate the smooth and safe operation of your team
  • Deliver a quality product on schedule and on budget
  • Ensure on-site quality control, limit rework and damage
  • Identify requirements for specific materials or tools and communicate these requests to the appropriate person
  • Know the WorkSafeBC requirements that apply to the work under your supervision and make sure those requirements are met
  • Lead by example, give clear direction, and act with greater good of the company in mind
  • Ensure your team complies with safety regulations, identify a need for safety training, complete an initial safety and hazard assessment
  • Ensure all workplace incidents of your crew are reported immediately to the next-level manager and are accurately documented in software and signed off by you; then participate in investigations as required to facilitate the process of shared learning outcomes throughout the company
  • Ensure daily timecards for direct reports are accurately entered into Heavy Job as required
  • Liaise with engineers, clients, and owners as required
Lead, Manage, Accountability

The Heavy Equipment Operator is accountable to the Operations Manager who may delegate authority.

Hours of Work

· Generally, 7:30am – 4:00pm, Monday – Friday

· Overtime required during busy construction periods

Accountabilities

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the following:

· Checks daily work schedule

· Perform routine machine maintenance and check-in procedures at the start and check-out procedures at end of shift including changing vehicle fluids, fueling, greasing – all maintenance other than that performed at the start and end of a shift needs to be authorized by the Chief Mechanic

· If equipment is down for repair during your shift:

(i) You must check in with your supervisor immediately

(ii) This is not deemed as personal time and you may be assigned alternative tasks – you are expected to perform work that moves the company forward, while on company time

(iii) If the repair is going to take a significant amount of time and there is no alternative work, your shift will end

(iv) Ensure you have clear instructions for your next shift at work, from your supervisor, before leaving the site

· Keep equipment clean inside and out

· Always operate machine in a safe and legal manner; be alert to hazards and follow safe work procedures

· Understands complete scope of work

· Able to read and understand layout information in conjunction with plans

· Able to get maximum productivity out of equipment without abusing it

· Organize necessary materials

· Trench excavation on grade

· Bulk excavation in a rational manner

· Backfilling

· Landscaping/Grading

· Equipment specific task

· Loading trucks

· Complete daily paperwork in an orderly, logical and legible fashion including all pertinent information

· Ensures customer satisfaction by displaying a courteous and friendly demeanor

· Ensures on-site quality control

· Always maintain personal safety gear (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel toed boots)
