As part of Athabasca University's workspace optimization, this role has been assessed to be**Virtual.**
**Virtual**: This role and all related functions can be performed in a virtual environment, as long as this virtual environment meets the AU acceptable definition for avirtual workspace.
**The Position**
The Academic Student Advisor will be responsible for responding to current student and prospective student program-related inquiries regarding the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Health
Administration programs within the Faculty of Health Disciplines. They will monitor program student progress and provide proactive guidance to support student success while assisting with complex administrative functions and processes within the Faculty of Health Disciplines. Other responsibilities include interpreting institutional student assessments, analyzing information provided and advising on the selection of appropriate courses based on the student's program requirements and other personal and professional commitments. Providing assistance to program students and prospective students, in consultation with the Office of the Registrar and other departments, with the interpretation of institutional requirements, policies and regulations is required.
**Qualifications**:
The following is a summary of the minimum skills required to perform the functions of this position:
- An undergraduate degree and at least 2 years post-secondary educational work experience in an academic program advising position are required.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills are essential.
- A passionate student-centered service model philosophy is imperative.
- Ability to think clearly and logically and search for solutions in complex and high-stakes situations.
- The ability to be patient, understanding and helpful given the high degree of contact with students and other clients is a must. Working with a team of service providers and serving students are critical components of this position.
- Demonstrated use of excellent written and oral communication skills including, but not limited to, listening, problem-solving, conflict resolution training, and investigative skills are essential.
- Immaculate attention to detail as this is a highly regulated program, and even minor errors in program advising can result in catastrophic educational outcomes for students.
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision and to recognize the need for keeping others informed, as required (APO, team colleagues or others as necessary).
