Position Summary
The Health & Safety Advisor is responsible for leading health and safety through oversight and support of two (2) Pole Peeling yards and ensuring that they are following company and government legislation. The incumbent’s goal is to promote a positive safety culture by demonstrating strong leadership skills and offering balanced safety-forward solutions to operational issues. This is a hands-on safety role that supports operations, and some travel is required within BC to support the assigned yard locations.
**Responsibilities**:
- Responsible for implementing and managing the program elements within the SHIELD corporate safety management system.
- Ensure corporate safety standards are maintained, including tracking/investigating accidents incidents, and compiling statistics.
- Maintain and update Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) program for all assigned yards.
- Maintain and manage the JHA/SOP program for all plants in their region.
- Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) database for all assigned yards.
- Observe and advise Plant Management and workers on safe work practices and job procedures.
- Maintain and update safety manuals at all assigned yards.
- Responsible and accountable for supporting operations in all safety related topics, including, safety talks, developing and managing various programs, procedures, and standards.
- Inspect, audit, and evaluate health and safety programs, workplace conditions, equipment and practices for continual improvement.
- Responsible for safety onboarding for new hires; training and organization required to ensure that the training meets the company standards.
- Identify, coordinate, and facilitate training for safety committee members and supervisors.
- Lead or Co-Chair safety committees for assigned yards and maintaining safety meeting minutes.
- Audit and inspect all yards by conducting Safety Walkthroughs, inspections, and employee interviews in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
- Assist with project and job site activities related to health and safety.
- Monitor regulation change (WorkSafe BC, Technical Safety BC, Railway Safety Act, Transport Canada Marine, etc.), ensuring yards are compliant with minimum regulatory expectations.
- Support Human Resources and Plant Managers in monitoring and responding to outstanding Workers Compensation Board claims while providing plant updates when and if required.
- Attend various training sessions and seminars that are safety or industry related.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications and Core Competencies**:
- Post-Secondary education in Health and Safety or combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 5 years of Health and Safety experience in the manufacturing industry
- Train-the-Trainer, an asset
- CRSP - Canadian Registered Safety Professional (in good standing), an asset
- Valid Driver’s License
- Strong understanding of federal and provincial health & safety regulations
- Excellent written communication skills (reporting, compiling information, etc.)
- Effective interpersonal and leadership skills
- Able to handle stress and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Good analytical skills
- Excellent team player
- Proactive and autonomous
- Intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office suite)
- Knowledge of forest industry or manufacturing, an asset
- Comfortable with public speaking
