**Opportunity**:
MacEwan University is seeking a Safety Codes Consultant - Fire and Life Safety for a full-time continuing opportunity with our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) department.

Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, this role plays a key part in ensuring the safety and compliance of MacEwan University’s City Centre Campus. With a primary focus on fire safety, building code compliance, emergency preparedness, and occupational health and safety, you’ll work across a variety of high-risk environments to help maintain a safe and secure campus.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE**:
Safety Codes and Health & Safety Consultation
- Providing expert guidance on safety codes and OHS legislation;
- Acting as institutional authority on Alberta Safety Codes Act and National Fire Code (AB Edition);
- Advising departments and contractors on code compliance for construction and renovations;
- Representing the university during inspections and enforcement actions;
- Responding to regulatory Orders, Notices, and RFIs;
- Assessing facilities for compliance and identifying areas for improvement;
- Contributing to operational best practices and HSE program development;
- Developing and delivering safety programs and training;
- Overseeing the institutional AED program, including budgeting and inspections;
- Conducting fire investigations and making recommendations to prevent recurrence;
- Managing and overseeing the University’s Laser Safety Program as the designated Laser Safety Officer (LSO);
- Performing laser safety risk assessments, inspections, training, and documentation;
- Reviewing and issuing fire/life safety permits and managing the centralized permitting system; and
- Monitoring permitted work to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Fire Safety Plans & Code Compliance
- Leading development and maintenance of fire safety plans and programs;
- Managing Fire Safety Program budget and mentoring staff on code compliance;
- Maintaining and updating Persons Requiring Assistance procedures;
- Coordinating third-party audits of fire safety;
- Creating fire emergency procedures for specialized campus areas;
- Submitting fire safety plans and occupancy load requests to the fire department;
- Managing fire department boxes, keys, and inventory;
- Liaising with local fire officials on inspections, compliance, and education;
- Leading Hot Work Program development and permit approvals;
- Conducting fire watch training, inspections, and compliance checks;
- Reviewing fire/life safety design on capital projects and serve on development committees;
- Participating in procurement and project planning to ensure fire/life safety integration;
- Tracking non-compliance issues and overseeing corrective actions; and
- Enforcing Fire Code requirements and addressing identified hazards.

Institutional Chemical Management
- Guiding safe chemical storage, handling, and disposal practices;
- Reviewing facility projects for chemical safety compliance;
- Maintaining chemical inventory and ensuring regulatory labeling and tracking;
- Inspecting high-risk areas for chemical safety and issuing corrective actions;
