The Safety Codes Council (Council) is an independent, self-funded regulatory organization mandated to provide oversight of the system and technical disciplines through a number of key legislated functions and client focused services. **THE OPPORTUNITY**
Reporting to the VP, Regulatory Affairs, Governance, and Policy, the Corporate Counsel assists the Council in improving its regulatory effectiveness and efficiency by bringing legal expertise to bear on a broad range of matters within the safety codes system.
The Corporate Counsel engages in a diverse corporate commercial practice, including contract drafting and review, statutory interpretation, and preparing general legal and strategic research advice to the Council as it relates to its operations, governance, and regulatory functions.
In addition, the position is responsible for the fair administration of the Council’s appeal process as set out in the _Safety Codes Act_ (Act), the Safety Codes Council Bylaws, and the Policies. This includes appeal case assessment and case management, and appeal process decision-writing.
The Corporate Counsel also supports the President and CEO of the Council in their role as Corporate Secretary, providing governance advice to the Board Directors and President and CEO, and recording meeting minutes for the Board of Directors and its sub-committees.

**JOB DETAILS**
- Provide sound legal advice and recommendations to Council employees
- Review, draft, and negotiate documents, business contracts, and Memorandums of Understanding.
- Monitor and report on legislative, judicial, and regulatory developments that may affect the Council.
- Oversee an accessible, timely, and transparent appeal process.
- Oversee the preparation of correspondence, reviews, stays, hearing scheduling, and arranging space as required.
- Decision-writing on behalf of the Administrative Tribunal, and the release of decisions.
- Provide advice to the President and CEO and Board Directors respecting bylaws and governance policies.
- Make recommendations for bylaw amendments in line with Council’s legislative and policy framework, and governance best practices.
**THE REQUIREMENTS**
- Bachelor of Law (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (JD).
- Membership or immediate eligibility for active membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
- Minimum three years’ recent work experience as a lawyer in Alberta.
- Recent work experience in a quasi-judicial or administrative decision-making process, including hearing coordination, supporting a Tribunal or Panel, and experience with administrative decision writing.
- Knowledgeable in board governance models and their respective practices and processes.
- Familiarity with government structures, the legislative process, interpreting legislation, the safety codes system, and Council’s governance model.
- Experience advising a Board, executive management, or other senior-decision makers on legal matters.
- Proficient with MS Office software (Adobe, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and video conferencing.
