**WHO WE ARE**:
Join the fast-growing BC Indigenous Housing Society (BCIHS) team as a Property Manager dedicated to providing safe, culturally appropriate housing for Indigenous individuals and families in Vancouver and throughout British Columbia. As a non-profit organization governed by an all-Indigenous Board of Directors, BCIHS manages a portfolio of 21 buildings and over 900 units, supporting over 1,300 Indigenous individuals and families. The Cultural Engagement Coordinator plays a crucial role in upholding BCIHS’s commitment to Truth & Reconciliation, Indigenization, and Decolonization.
**JOB OVERVIEW**:
This is a newly created position intended to meet the needs of the organization and the community we serve. The Indigenous Engagement Coordinator is responsible for leading, coordinating and undertaking activities, initiatives and programs that promote inclusivity, trust, community engagement, personal wellbeing and connection to Indigenous culture.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develops and implements culturally relevant programming for all supportive housing sites
- Provides guidance and support to staff to enable best practice cultural awareness in the way staff connect with and work with Indigenous, Metis and Inuit people.
- Collaborates with management to develop, design, adapt and evaluate culturally responsive training resources.
- Collaborates with staff and key stakeholders to build capacity for, create, build engagement and participation in various programs, initiatives and events that celebrate Indigenous culture, traditions, knowledge and ways.
- Develops intake/enrollment processes, documentation for participants, maintains records of events - attendance, participant experience and satisfaction, cost/benefit assessment; reports on events to direct supervisor and executive as directed
- Establishes a respectful and meaningful relationship with program participants
- Develop a calendar of events across the supportive housing portfolio for each site.
- Facilitates and engages in cultural ceremonies such as healing circles, talking circles, and smudging
- Creates and maintains records of culturally relevant resources within the community for supportive housing programs and provides support in accessing resources
- Ability to manage a budget and engage in fiscally responsible practices
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
- Performs other duties as assigned
**Qualifications**
- Experience working among Indigenous people, facilitating projects and events
- 2+ years of recent, related work experience working with people with mental health, addictions, homelessness or other traumatic experiences
- Current First Aid and Naloxone Certification desired
- Valid BC Drivers License and reliable transportation
- Clear vulnerable persons background check
**Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities**
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture, traditions and experiences
- Knowledge and experience with chronically homeless individuals and women fleeing violence
- General knowledge of mental health issues, medications, treatment and support resources
- Knowledge of the housing continuum, including supported housing systems and program models for special needs populations
- Demonstrated understanding of oppression and marginalization of Indigenous people
- Ability to address groups, providing teaching and instruction
- Ability to evaluate and report on program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Ability to establish workload priorities, adjust to new or unexpected events, problem solve, and deal effectively with conflict situations
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
**Diversity and Inclusion Statement**
Pay: $60,000 + per year depending on qualifications
