Financial Controller

CMS Group is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Financial Controller for our Mechanical Business Unit, CMS Commercial Mechanical Services. The Financial Controller will be responsible for overseeing all financial activities, including corporate finance functions, project finance, and financial strategy. This role will lead a dedicated team of four financial professionals and will report directly to the President and CEO.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Management & Reporting:
- Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Ensure compliance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
- Analyze financial statements and provide actionable insights to support business decisions. Develop internal control process improvements.
- Prepare and execute year end activities with external audit & accounting firm
- Corporate Finance Functions:
- Manage budgeting and forecasting processes, including variance analysis.
- Oversee cash flow management and working capital optimization.
- Responsible for management of AP \ AR activities to ensure proper revenue management - oversee payment schedules for lease agreements, WSIB, federal tax and other annual contributions.
- Provide weekly cash flow reports to the President for review and provide follow up information for any relevant items. Maintain open communication lines with executive leadership of any financial information that will be affecting cash flow reports.
- Manage Accounts Payable (team of 2) and AR Specialist to ensure billings and collections are current and be involved in any issues that need special attention (vendors, customer accounts)
- Work closely with Senior Accountant to process payroll (weekly), address any pay roll issues with field employees, update payroll information such as apprenticeship levels, new employee set ups, union collective agreement changes and address any issues through Jonas field time with Labor Managers
- Assist in preparation of ROE’s for employees.
- Prepare ad-hoc reports for executive leadership as required
3. Project Finance Responsibilities:
- Monitor and analyze project budgets, costs, and financial performance. Work with Operations Manager to work on any issues in respect to cost control activities.
- Act as a key financial liaison between Corporate Finance, Operations and Service teams to address any issues and build efficiencies.
- Financial Strategy & Planning:
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and execute financial strategies aligned with business goals.
- Evaluate financial implications of business decisions and strategic initiatives.
- Conduct financial modeling and scenario analysis to support strategic planning.
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise and mentor a team of four financial professionals, providing guidance and support.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment. Conduct yearly reviews and provide executive leadership with performance updates on staff as well as consult on future team growth plans.
- Train and mentor new employees, manage workflow capacity and be responsible for cross training in the team
- Software & Systems:
- Utilize Jonas software for financial management, reporting, and analysis.
- Ensure accurate and efficient use of the software for all financial activities.
- Stay updated on software developments and recommend enhancements as needed. Work closely with external Jonas support team for any additional training or modifications needed in the system.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in finance, with at least 5 years in a managerial role. Previous experience within a unionized construction environment considered an asset. **Construction industry experience mandatory.**:
- Proven experience with corporate finance, project finance, and strategic financial planning.
- Advanced proficiency in Jonas software and other financial management systems.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex financial data.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior management.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities.
Additional Information:
- Work Environment**:Office-based position** office hours are 8AM-4PM
- Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience + annual bonus, comprehensive health benefits.
Pay: $115,000.00-$130,000.00 per year
