**Job description - Estimator / Purchasing**

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate estimates for both small and large sized projects. Estimator will be required to analyze information, specifications, proposals, and important metrics, to provide quantity take-off and accurate costing. The estimating process includes reading drawings, quantity take-off, analyzing company’s data, writing proposals, and obtaining costs for materials.

The purchaser reports to the department manager and is responsible for identifying suppliers, researching goods and services, processing purchase orders, and verifying delivered items.

To be successful as a purchasing agent you should be able to critically assess suppliers, products, and services, and negotiate the best possible deals. Ultimately, an outstanding purchasing agent has a keen sense of business and maintains meticulous transaction records.

**Estimating Duties (include but are not limited to)**:

- Prepare estimates of probable costs of materials, labor and equipment, and subcontracts for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings, and specifications.
- Advise on tendering procedures, examine, and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards, and conduct negotiations.
- Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Liaise, consult, and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
- Manage and coordinate construction projects and prepare construction progress schedules.
- Prepare work to be accomplished by gathering information and requirements, setting priorities.
- Prepare budgets by studying plans, updating specifications, identifying, and projecting costs for each elevation.
- Create estimates by considering material costs and the complexity of the project.
- Be resourceful to meet client budgets where possible (suggest other materials or subcontractors).
- Maintain master price list by updating information.
- Resolve cost discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.
- Discuss plans and specifications of job with Manager.
- Obtain consultants, plans, drawings and or subcontractors as needed in order to create an estimate.
- Must be able to use various software as well as historical data to build estimates.
- Maintain quality service by following organization standards.

**Purchasing Duties (include but are not limited to)**:

- Verifies purchase requisitions by comparing items requested to master list; clarifying unclear items; recommending alternatives.
- Forwards available inventory items by verifying stock; scheduling delivery.
- Prepares purchase orders by verifying specifications and price; obtaining recommendations from suppliers for substitute items; obtaining approval from requisitioning department.
- Obtains purchased items by forwarding orders to suppliers; monitoring and expediting orders.
- Verifies receipt of items by comparing items received to items ordered; resolves shipments in error with suppliers.
- Authorizes payment for purchases by forwarding receiving documentation.
- Keeps information accessible by sorting and filing documents.
- Provides purchasing planning and control information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
- Accomplishes purchasing and organization mission by completing related results as needed.
