**General Purpose**
Reporting to the Manager of Accessibility Services, this position advises, supports and counsels students with multiple disabilities, which frequently includes mental health conditions. This Advisor works both on-campus and remotely.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
The Advisor negotiates academic accommodation in order to help the university fulfil its duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code. They also help students navigate university policies, procedures, services and disability-related resources. They have significant collaborative relationships with faculty, program counsellors, the Office of Registrarial Services, the Library, and Physical Resources. The incumbent also works with health care professionals to clarify the functional abilities of students on their caseload. They routinely synthesize divergent information including academic requirements, medical information, and human rights legislation to formulate recommendations.
The Advisor uses advanced counselling skills to assess daily functioning; to assist with maintaining, stabilizing and/or improving health and mental health; and to support positive student development. They are also required to be knowledgeable about adaptive technologies for overcoming a wide range of barriers in the physical and learning environment, and of academic requirements and pedagogy.
**Requirements**:
Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in occupational therapy, social work or a related discipline, and at least three years of related job experience. This position also requires demonstrated skill in the analysis of episodic and emerging conditions. The Advisor is expected to be knowledgeable about the OHRC Policy on Accessible Education for Students with Disabilities. Understanding the importance of consistency in decision-making across a diverse team, and the importance of academic integrity across an even more diverse range of academic programs is essential.Occasional evenings and weekend work may be required. Exceptional communication and organizational skills are essential.
