Job Summary: The Subject Specialist will plan, develop, coordinate and implement academic support programs in one or more target disciplines for undergraduate and graduate students at Ontario Tech to impact student success initiatives, retention and overall student experience.

Nature of work:
Reporting to the Manager, Student Learning Centre, the Subject Specialist will supplement the existing curriculum and help students achieve educational success through the development of academic skills and knowledge. The role involves close collaboration with students, faculty and staff across the university to coordinate and promote effective mathematical skills development.

Responsibilities/accountabilities:1. Academic Development and Support
  • Provides subject matter support and assistance in various formats to address the learning and development goals of diverse undergraduate and graduate students, including coaching for successful learning.
  • Supports other academic programming in the SLC through collaboration and mentoring with staff, faculty, and student staff.
  • Maintains knowledge of curriculum, textbooks, online resources, and course requirements at Ontario Tech, including strategies for developing critical thinking and problem solving.
2. Academic Skills Programming Development and Coordination
  • Develops and delivers high-quality, accessible programming in various formats to promote effective academic skill development, grounded in theory and research to meet student learning needs.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with key constituents and strategic partners in the Office of Graduate Studies, academic faculties, and Student Societies for ongoing collaboration to ensure programming meets students’ needs.
3. Resource Development
  • Contributes to the development of a comprehensive repository of university-level subject matter resources, ensuring students’ access to timely, appropriate, and effective support through research and resource development.
4. Assessment
  • Works with campus partners to formulate Key Performance Indicators for programs and assess progress toward those outcomes.
  • Maintains records and data for service evaluation.

  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of students, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent computer and web-based technical skills
  • Ability to analyze students’ needs, solve problems, and explore solutions
Required Education:
  • Master’s Degree in the target discipline or related discipline
  • An Adult Education Teaching certificate and/or Teacher preparation degree is preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education, professional designations/certifications, and related experience may be considered
  • Verification of Academic credentials may be required
Required Experience:
  • A minimum of one to three years’ experience, preferably with university students
  • Experience in working with at-risk students and students with diverse needs
Knowledge:
  • Superior knowledge of foundational concepts in the target disciplines and advanced skills suitable for 3rd or 4th year university level
  • Solid knowledge of adult learning principles and diverse student learning needs to establish a positive learning environment
