Description

The Research Services Team in the Office of VP Research invites applications for a Specialist. This Full-time Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Manager, Knowledge to Impact and is responsible for supporting the University of Calgary campus community with the development of new approaches and tools to maximize and recognize research impact.

The Knowledge to Impact unit is centered around the notion of research impact i.e., making a difference in the communities we serve. Tied to the foundational commitments of University of Calgary¿s Ahead of Tomorrow vision, the Knowledge to Impact team supports collaborative efforts to maximize and recognize positive impacts of research for the benefit of our local, national and international communities. The unit supports several aspects of the pathway to research impact, from community-engaged research partnership development, knowledge mobilization planning, open science practices, through to best practices for the assessment of the quality and impact of research. Team members are specialists in various areas who collaborate closely to deliver on the Knowledge to Impact team¿s overall objectives.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Develop and Deliver Capacity-Building Activities and Resources

  • Create and disseminate resources and communications that promote the principles of responsible research assessment, research impact, open science, partnerships and knowledge mobilization to share best practices from UCalgary and beyond, and support researchers and faculties to implement new approaches.
  • Develop user-centered tools and resources (digital and other) that help researchers and units effectively plan for, capture and summarize their research impact.
  • Exercise sound judgement in the application of traditional metrics for research assessment, as well as the adaptation and application of a broader range of measures recommended by DORA and other leaders in responsible research assessment.
  • Develop and maintain resources that will advance the practice of responsible research assessment and research impact assessment across the University.
  • Develop and lead capacity-building workshops in consultation with other members of the Knowledge to Impact team and intended audiences.
  • Collate and maintain library (electronic) of research impact, knowledge mobilization, partnership and open science materials, reference and resources.
  • Work with other members of the unit and VPRO communications staff to ensure the research community is kept informed of emerging opportunities and best practices in the Knowledge to Impact sphere.
  • Lead the development and facilitation of diverse communities of practitioners and scholars with experience in the practical application and communication of community-engaged research, emerging research impact assessment methods and non-traditional measures of research impact.
  • Provide consultation, feedback and advising on effective research impact statements, knowledge mobilization plans, or open science approaches to facilitate success in research funding applications (Tri-Agency and other strategic opportunities).

Reporting and Evaluation

  • Work with the Consultant, Research Assessment to maintain up-to-date knowledge of internal policies and practices for research assessment and research impact across UCalgary faculties and units.
  • Work with colleagues in relevant units to capture the output of this work, track the current status of assessment policies and practices across the academy, and progress over time.
  • Collect, maintain and provide analysis of appropriate performance metrics to monitor the activities and outcomes of the portfolio.
  • Keep abreast of relevant policies and practices in other organizations (i.e. other Canadian post-secondary institutions, other signatories of DORA, etc.) in order to make informed recommendations about the application of similar policies and practices at UCalgary.
  • Develop guidelines to assist the research community with reporting on impact to the institution and other external agencies.

Communication, Relationship Building and Brokering Networking

  • Identify and build trust-based relationships with researchers, faculty research leaders, colleagues and other units on campus to understand research impact, knowledge mobilization, partnerships, and open science needs and expectations and to coordinate activities and supports.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with constituents both internal and external to the University.
  • Organize and host virtual and/or in-person events, including working groups, workshops or committees in collaboration with team and other units.
  • Plan for and proactively drive infrastructure, tools and resources usage and uptake.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • A post-secondary graduate degree in a relevant domain (i.e. a program with a strong emphasis on research methods, implementation science and/or assessment) and, a minimum of 3 years of related experience in the research to impact ecosystem, or commensurate experience.
  • Subject matter expertise in research assessment, implementation science, knowledge mobilization, open science, and/or research impact assessment. Deep knowledge in any of these themes is considered an asset.
  • Strong experience in user-centered design, development and implementation of research and/or educational tools and resources.
  • Demonstrated excellence with technical, written and verbal communications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, tact and perseverance. Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
  • Ability to listen effectively and distil complex, sometimes competing information from multiple sources and deliver original solutions that have the desired impact.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with constantly shifting priorities and to work to deadlines while managing multiple tasks and providing consistently high levels of service.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and project management skills.
  • Ability and confidence to independently lead initiatives with minimal supervision and to work collaboratively with others on campus.
  • Strong understanding of the University¿s mission, values and plans, as well as research cultures and cycles.
  • Proficiency or ability to quickly become proficient with standard office software with University business systems (e.g. Microsoft Office, SharePoint).
