Calgary, Alberta, Canada University of Calgary - Calgary Prion Research Unit Full time
Postdoctoral Researcher Opportunity

The University of Calgary's Calgary Prion Research Unit, Dr. Sabine Gilch lab, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team and contribute to cutting-edge research projects related to cell biology of prion infection and molecular mechanisms and pathogenesis of chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of cervids.

Research Goals

Our research aims to understand the impact of prion conversion and accumulation on neuronal metabolism, determine host factors that influence the evolution of prion strains in CWD, and develop tools to treat prion diseases in humans and mitigate the spread of CWD.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments using a range of cell and ex vivo models of prion infection, including primary neurons and organotypic slice cultures, to investigate the impact of prion infection on endocytic pathways, membrane properties, and stress responses.
  • Use gene-targeted mouse models of CWD established by our lab, conventional transgenic mice, and cell culture models as well as in vitro prion amplification methods (RT-QuIC and PMCA) to study mechanisms underlying strain evolution in different transmission routes, prion protein polymorphisms, and tissue environment.
Requirements
  • PhD in biochemistry, neuroscience, infectious diseases, or related fields obtained within the last 2 years.
  • Strong interest in prions and neurodegenerative diseases; previous experience with prions, prion-like diseases, and methods such as BioID are considered an asset.
Benefits

We offer a competitive salary range of $55,000 - $65,000 CAD per annum, commensurate with experience, and a vibrant postdoctoral community with career development events and regular networking meetings.

The Gilch lab values an inclusive, friendly, respectful, and non-discriminatory working environment, and candidates are expected to adhere to these principles.
