About The Role

Reporting to the Manager of Accounting and Capital Reporting, the incumbent will provide technical advice and expertise on accounting issues to a broad range of clients with varying levels of financial knowledge. Throughout the year, the incumbent will provide financial analysis and reporting on school budget and school generated fund (SGF) spending to principals and meet regularly with the Superintendents of Student Achievement to discuss the financial position of their Family of Schools. In addition, quarterly summary information on school spending will be provided to assist in the decision-making process by Senior Management and Board committees.

The incumbent will supervise and support the School Financial Support Staff in their daily work and provide guidance and recommendations to School Office Administrators, Principals and Superintendents that is compliant with School Generated Funds, Fundraising and other board policies and procedures.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

Ensure complete and accurate recording of all funds received and expenses incurred at the school level.

Analyze and review financial data to provide recommendations, presentations and assist with decision-making by Executive Council.

Hire, train and supervise School Financial Support staff and lead and motivate staff to provide exemplary service to our internal associates.

Chair and lead the School Budget Advisory Committee of Elementary and Secondary Principals and provide the committee with regular updates on school spending and provide guidance on operational issues that directly impact the schools.

In collaboration with other Senior Financial Analysts, support the preparation of Ministry reporting documents and the Board’s audited financial statements.

Maintain and update interim financial reports and prepare account reconciliations and analyze account variances in related to school generated funds.

Meet regularly with Superintendents of Student Achievement to review the year-to-date spending of their schools and work with them to support the schools with their financial position.

Perform regular internal audits of school spending to ensure that all policies and procedures are being followed and provide recommendations on how to improve their financial operations.

Assist the external auditors with the year end audit of school finances as part of the year end process.

Identify and implement process efficiencies within School Financial Support unit and the Financial Services Department as a whole.

Qualifications

Degree/post-secondary education in Business Administration, Commerce or Accounting.

Minimum five years of progressive financial experience, including leadership experience, preferably in the public sector.

Preference will be given to candidates with CPA designation or candidates who are actively pursuing their CPA designation.

Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and Ministry of Education compliance requirements is an asset.

Highly developed analytical and report-writing skills and attention to detail.

Advanced level of proficiency using computerized financial systems, HRIS and Microsoft Office Suite including spreadsheet software.

Knowledge of School Generated Funds and School Budget process is an asset.

Excellent research, organizational, problem solving and strategic thinking skills.

Working knowledge of SGF Ministry Guidelines and Board policies and procedures related specifically to SGF and fundraising in addition to other financial policies and procedures.

Demonstrate personal initiative, sound judgement, strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to function effectively and collaboratively with various employee groups and external contacts.

Excellent planning skills with experience in the effective management of multiple projects and demonstrated ability to successfully complete tasks and meet department and board goals aligned to the multi-year strategic plan.

The successful applicant may be required to work after hours based on system needs.

Valid driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle required.
