Position Summary

A dynamic and proactive WHMIS Coordinator is required to support the safe management of hazardous products across the University of Regina campus.

This key role assists academic and business units in maintaining compliance with the legislated Workplace Hazardous Material Information System, National Fire Code of Canada, and relevant inventory controls. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure updated Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are obtained and distributed as required;
  • Crafting and disseminating workplace labels for decanted or created hazardous products;
  • Maintaining accurate records of hazardous product inventories across campus using the U of R chemical inventory database;
  • Providing assessments and recommendations for chemical purchases made by lab personnel;
  • Developing inspection policies and procedures, including routine inspections focused on chemical storage, quantity, compatibility, and regulatory compliance;
  • Educating stakeholders on proper chemical storage, identifying potential hazards, and promoting area-specific chemical safety practices;
  • Drafting reports on deficiencies found and consulting on remediation activities;
  • Analyzing data related to chemical storage practices, processes, and policies, as well as hazardous material inventory practices, processes, and policies;
  • Maintaining a reporting system to inform Regina Fire and Protective Services of each area's fire load status;
  • Guiding stakeholders on best-practice chemical inventory management and collaborating to build tailored chemical management plans.

About This Role

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of chemical safety, WHMIS, and the National Fire Code of Canada, along with excellent planning, organizational, analytical, and administrative skills. Previous experience in a post-secondary research environment is an asset. Proficiency in office software systems and databases to support data entry and tracking of WHMIS controlled substances is also essential.

The University of Regina offers a competitive salary range of $60,000 - $80,000 per annum, commensurate with qualifications and experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage, flexible spending accounts, and a defined contribution pension plan.
