The Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists is seeking an experienced Forensic Agrologist to join its team. As a Forensic Agrologist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of agriculture practices in Saskatchewan.

About the Role

This exciting opportunity will involve working with various stakeholders, including farmers, ranchers, and agri-businesses, to develop and implement pesticide regulatory frameworks, conduct inspections, and investigate complaints related to pesticide applications. You will be responsible for providing specialist services to the Government of Saskatchewan, including forensic agrology, diagnostics, and investigations.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Pesticide Regulatory Framework Development: Support the development of a comprehensive pesticide regulatory framework for the Ministry of Agriculture.
  2. Pesticide Inspections Program: Develop and deliver a pesticide inspections program under The Pest Control Products (Saskatchewan) Act, including inspections of Saskatchewan pesticide license holders.
  3. Complaint Investigations: Respond to pesticide application complaints, conduct investigations, and enforcement actions as required under The Pest Control Products (Saskatchewan) Act.
  4. Forensic Agrology Services: Provide specialist services to the Government of Saskatchewan relating to forensic agrology, herbicide modes of action, activity, and diagnostics.
  5. Pesticide Regulatory Public Trust Programming: Develop and deliver pesticide regulatory public trust programming in the province.
  6. Committee Representation: Represent the ministry on various committees with external partners and stakeholders, at all levels of government and industry groups.
  7. Support to Senior Leadership Team: Provide support to the Minister's office and the Senior Leadership Team by responding to Ministerial Requests, providing material for Briefing Notes and Ministerial letters.
  8. Record Keeping: Ensure regulatory records contain all required information and are archived properly.
Requirements
  • A minimum Master of Science in Agriculture or a related field, or extensive knowledge of agronomy gained through a graduate degree specializing in plant science, biology, biochemistry; or at least 5 years of experience working in crop production management systems.
  • Detailed understanding of the growth of crops and plants, preferably in a western Canadian context, and understanding of plant metabolism, and how to diagnose injury from diseases, including biotic and abiotic (environment and chemical injury).
  • Detailed understanding of the mode of action of herbicides and pesticides and the impacts on plant health, human health, and the environment.
  • Experience with crop scouting procedures and tools as a forensic agrologist required to successfully investigate chemical trespass/drift complaints and diagnose herbicide damage.
  • Ability to provide detailed information and presentations of a technical/scientific or social nature, in terms that will vary in technical complexity and present information in a language to suit the target audience.
  • Motivated and enthusiastic about agriculture, policy, public trust, client service, integrated weed and pest management, research and extension.
