About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Curator of Mi'kmaw Cultural Heritage to join our team at the Nova Scotia Museum. As a key member of our collections management team, you will be responsible for the acquisition, research, and care of the Mi'kmaw Cultural Heritage Collection.

Primary Accountabilities

As Curator, you will work closely with Mi'kmaq cultural organizations, artists, musicians, educators, Elders, knowledge holders, and community leaders to develop and cultivate strong relationships. You will also be responsible for:

  • Collection curation, including acquisition, deaccessions, documentation, and management of the Mi'kmaw heritage collection and cultural belongings
  • Supervision of staff, research associates, assistants, volunteers, students as applicable
  • Leadership in research and presentation of results through online and traditional publications, interpretive products, exhibitions, lectures, and other means
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need a minimum of a bachelor's degree plus five (5) years related experience; or a Master's degree plus 3 years of related experience. A specialized degree related to Mi'kmaw History or Heritage, with broad experience in a range of Mi'kmaw cultural heritage and community areas will be considered an asset.

Candidates should demonstrate extensive and thorough knowledge of Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia, Mi'kmaw heritage and history. They must have experience with conducting research; working with museum collections; collection management; and conservation principles, including safe care and handling of objects.

Experience should include but not be limited to:

  • Strong working knowledge of Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia, Mi'kmaw culture and heritage
  • Experience working in and with Mi'kmaq or other Indigenous communities
  • Ability to develop and cultivate strong relationships within the Mi'kmaw community
  • Best practices of museum collection object preparation and preservation, including preventative conservation and safe handling
  • Training and expertise in museum methods including cataloguing and database use
  • Ability to speak Mi'kmaw is an asset
