About the Role

Family Services of Greater Vancouver is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Indigenous Youth Outreach Coordinator to join our team. As a key member of our Directions Youth Services division, you will play a vital role in promoting the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness of Indigenous youth in our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide outreach services to Indigenous youth at risk of homelessness or experiencing homelessness, establishing trusting relationships and connecting them with culturally appropriate resources and services.
  • Develop and implement programming and workshops that incorporate Indigenous practices and knowledge, reflecting the needs and interests of Indigenous youth in urban settings.
  • Collaborate with community agencies, government ministries, and knowledge keepers to develop youth case management plans that address the unique needs and identities of Indigenous youth.
  • Work independently and in pairs to respond to emerging needs and crises, prioritizing tasks as they arise.
Requirements
  • Two-year post-secondary course or diploma in social work or youth care, or a related field.
  • Minimum one year of experience working with Indigenous youth, with a focus on adolescent development and the impacts of substance use, mental health challenges, poverty, neurodiversity, and marginalization.
  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of substance use, mental health, and sexual exploitation, as well as the Harm Reduction model.
  • Knowledge of community, social, and health resources, as well as the ongoing and systemic impacts of colonization.
  • Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behavior, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, including carrying a full backpack with harm reduction supplies, water, and snacks while walking for 2-5 hours.
Working Conditions
  • 24-hour crisis response resource center and the streets of the City of Vancouver.
  • Ability to work days and evenings, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to walk with a backpack full of supplies approximately 20-25 km per day.
