Job Title: Youth Outreach Worker

Located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, the District of West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore, boasting parks, beaches, and sports, recreation, and arts amenities. We are seeking employees with a passion for public service who share our commitment to creating a complete, inclusive, and livable community.

Job Summary

The West Vancouver Community Services Department is currently seeking a permanent full-time Youth Outreach Worker to join our highly qualified team. In this role, you will deliver primarily preventative, "wrap-around" community-based services to address age-appropriate needs, respond to youths' unique needs to develop knowledge and skills, learn to manage emotions and relationships, and acquire important attributes and abilities. You will engage with youth in all places and spaces in West Vancouver.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish ongoing relationships with youth, including those in imminent risk, to provide support and develop personal, social, and leadership potential;
  • Provide outreach to youth in the community;
  • Work independently and utilize critical thinking skills to work effectively with youth in crisis;
  • Assist in managing youth in our various Youth Services drop-in spaces;
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, implement, and supervise Youth Services outreach programs, out trips, and events;
  • Work in partnership and collaboration with other Youth Services providers;
  • Understand a wide variety of youth issues;
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements

The preferred candidate will have:

  • The ability to recognize and deal with behavioral and social adjustment issues;
  • Considerable knowledge of small group dynamics and leadership related to youth;
  • Considerable knowledge of available recreational, social, educational, cultural, and vocational opportunities offered through public and private organizations;
  • Working knowledge of standard casework techniques and their application to behavioral, social, and family problems;
  • Past demonstrated experience working with a variety of partner agencies;
  • Ability to engage youth in activities;
  • Proven ability to generate new ideas and organize special events within a budget.

Required qualifications include: a University or college degree in social sciences or a youth-related subject, such as Education or Child and Youth Care, plus a minimum of two years' experience working with youth, preferably in an outreach capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A current Emergency First Aid (or better) with CPR 'C' and AED certification, an unrestricted Class 4 BC Driver's License, and access to use of a personal vehicle is required. Additional training and courses in mental health, addictions, and personal coaching is an asset.

We recognize the importance of a diverse workplace and strive to meaningfully reflect the community we so proudly serve. We encourage Indigenous applicants, people of color, all genders, 2SLGBTQIA+, and persons with disabilities to apply.

The successful candidate will be required to supply a police information check and a copy of their credentials.
