About Us:
The Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) has dedicated over three decades to enhancing the health and wellbeing of Indigenous youth in the Metro Vancouver region. As a prominent non-profit organization, we acknowledge Indigenous youth as authorities in their own narratives and aim to offer programs and opportunities that resonate with their experiences.
At UNYA, we have established a Philosophy of Care that draws from best practices, serving as the foundational framework for our decision-making and interactions with the youth we support. This approach empowers our staff to connect with youth in a manner that balances flexibility with structure, ensuring that we meet their needs while providing consistent, high-quality care across all our programs. Our five core philosophies include:
- Trauma-Informed Practice
- Two-Eyed Seeing
- Harm Reduction Practice
- Youth/Person-Centered Practice
- Culture as Therapy
Opportunity Overview:
As a key member of the Overly Creative Minds (OCM) team, the Program Manager will oversee the daily operations of the program, ensuring its effectiveness in supporting and empowering Indigenous youth aged 11 to 24 through artistic avenues. This role entails cultivating and sustaining partnerships with community organizations, collaborators, and facilitators, supervising the OCM Youth Care Counsellor and Summer Student, and engaging in front-line youth work. Additionally, the Manager will handle administrative responsibilities such as program promotion, data compilation, report writing, and budget management. The Program Manager will report directly to the Director of Youth Engagement. This is a full-time position, with standard hours set from Monday to Thursday, 12 PM to 8 PM, and Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, though adjustments may be made based on program needs.
OCM provides Indigenous youth with a secure and inviting environment to explore arts and culture, helping them to discover and amplify their voices.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field, along with a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven experience in developing and delivering diverse arts and culture or youth programming, with strong knowledge and skills in these areas considered advantageous.
- Experience engaging with the Indigenous community and effectively working with a diverse range of Indigenous youth, along with a solid understanding of community resources in Vancouver, particularly those specific to youth and Indigenous populations.
- Awareness of the family and social challenges faced by Indigenous youth today, including the lasting impacts of the residential school system. A commitment to participating in Indigenous protocols and practices is essential.
- Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and conduct program evaluations.
- Experience in supervising staff and volunteers, with the ability to address and resolve workplace conflicts.
- Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office; familiarity with multimedia, photography, music, and arts-related software is a plus.
- Alignment with the organization's mandate, policies, and procedures.
- A completed criminal record check satisfactory to UNYA.
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination will be required.
- Priority will be given to qualified Indigenous, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit candidates as per section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
- A valid BC Driver's License and the ability to provide a Driver's Abstract is an asset.
- FoodSafe and First Aid certifications are beneficial.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and manage the daily operations of the OCM Program.
- Ensure program alignment with its mission and objectives, creating a safe and inclusive environment for Indigenous youth to explore and express themselves through art.
- Establish a secure atmosphere for all youth and staff by addressing behaviors through a trauma-informed perspective, modeling respectful interactions, and engaging in thoughtful and enjoyable exchanges with both staff and youth. Adhere to UNYA's Philosophy of Care and all relevant policies and procedures.
- Directly interact with youth, providing leadership, support, mentorship, and crisis intervention to empower them in overcoming challenges and building resilience. Actively participate in programming to serve as a positive role model.
- Collaborate closely with other front-line workers, program managers, and external partners to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to youth support.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with various community organizations, partners, and facilitators to enhance program effectiveness and broaden its reach. Regularly seek feedback from program participants to evaluate OCM programming and continuously provide youth with new opportunities.
- Supervise and mentor the OCM Youth Care Counsellor, offering coaching and professional development opportunities. Oversee OCM Summer Students as needed.
- Encourage a positive and collaborative work environment that fosters creativity, teamwork, and personal growth.
- Organize and participate in community events, workshops, and outreach activities to promote the program's impact and gather support.
- Adapt and refine program activities based on community needs, participant feedback, and evolving circumstances.
- Manage the program budget responsibly, ensuring efficient resource use, monitoring expenses, tracking financial transactions, and submitting timely financial reports.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Youth Engagement.

- Annual salary of $69,529.17
- Full-time, 40 hours per week
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Vacation, sick leave, agency, and wellness days
- Access to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) providing no-cost counseling services
- Cultural and spiritual guidance from UNYA's Elder in Residence
- Monthly staff development opportunities
