Director, Head of Treasury Operations

The Head of Treasury will oversee and direct the operations of the Treasury department to support SMBC Group in meeting its financial goals and budget targets. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing treasury positions in Foreign Exchange, Money Market, FX Derivatives, and Capital Market activities in line with the long-term goals of the Bank and ensuring compliance with standard accounting procedures, regulatory expectations, and the Bank's internal liquidity and funding management framework.
Key Responsibilities:
•Subject Matter Expertise: Anticipate market volatility, liquidity, government bonds, notes, and other market-related developments.
•Trading and Risk Management: Direct and execute foreign exchange, money market, derivative, and capital market activities to meet customer requirements and mitigate the Bank's exposure to volatile market movements.
•Derivative Products: Develop proficiency in derivative products such as Interest Rate Swaps, Cross Currency Swaps, and Currency Options to support the corporate customer base and hedge the Bank's exposure.
•Cash and Liquidity Management: Manage daily cash balances and trading in financial markets to ensure the Bank's cash flow is adequate to operate efficiently, make prudent cash flow forecasts, and anticipate challenges from changes in market sentiment.
•Funding and Liquidity: Diversify funding sources through corporate and interbank deposits and issuance of treasury funding products such as short-term and medium-term bank deposit notes to provide adequate funding to fund loan assets, manage money gap, and maintain internal liquidity requirements.
•Liquidity Management: Familiarity with surplus liquidity management, including Treasury Bills, Government and Provincial Bonds, Reverse Repos, and other securities approved by the Management for supplementary liquidity purposes.
•FX Exposure Management: Manage the Bank's FX exposure in all approved currencies, prudently, and within established guidelines and policies to enhance the Bank's profitability.
•Collaboration and Communication: Liaise with Corporate Treasury teams in other jurisdictions, such as New York and Tokyo, and collaborate with the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) and Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) to mature the Branch's overall framework for liquidity and funding risk management.
Qualifications and Skills:
•Education: An Undergraduate degree in business, economics, or other related subjects is a must.
•Experience: 10 years of previous professional dealing experience in Canadian financial services.
•Skills: Good understanding and working knowledge of money market, FX, capital markets, economics, and analysis of markets and trends.
•Technical Skills: Proficiency in the use of Reuters 3000 Dealing System, Microsoft Office, and above-average Excel skills.
•Soft Skills: Strong reasoning ability, analytical and communication skills, excellent writing skills, and ability to learn quickly and dissect complicated issues within a large financial institution.
•Regulatory Knowledge: Reasonable knowledge of the Bank Act and OSFI guidelines.
