About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and experienced lawyer to join our team at the Government of Nova Scotia. As a legal counsel, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging and complex legal matters, advising and representing the provincial government on key issues.

Primary Accountabilities
  1. Advising Senior Government Leaders: Provide legal advice to Ministers, Deputy/Associate Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government leaders on matters involving law, negotiation, strategy, and public policy.
  2. Drafting and Interpreting Statutes and Regulations: Draft and interpret statutes and regulations, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  3. Drafting and Interpreting Contracts: Draft and interpret contracts, ensuring that they are fair, reasonable, and compliant with relevant laws and regulations.
  4. Assisting with Submissions to Cabinet: Assist with submissions to Cabinet, providing legal advice and guidance on key issues.
  5. Presenting Information to the Public: Present information about government and law to the public, either as part of a consultation process for public policy development or as part of a public awareness campaign.
  6. Serving on Project Teams: Serve on project teams with senior and intermediate staff of client departments, providing legal advice and guidance as needed.
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:

  1. Practicing Membership in the Nova Scotia Barristers Society: Be a practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society, in good standing.
Assets

The following are assets, but not required:

  1. Experience Advising Government Departments: Experience advising government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions, and other public sector entities.
  2. Experience with Civil Litigation: Experience with civil litigation, including drafting and arguing court documents.
  3. Experience with Commercial Transactions: Experience with commercial transactions, including drafting and negotiating contracts.
Working Conditions

This is a challenging and dynamic role that requires:

  1. Sitting at a Computer for Long Periods of Time: Sitting at a computer for long periods of time, with frequent breaks to stretch and move around.

This role requires a high level of mental focus, with the ability to:

  1. Review Voluminous Written Material: Review voluminous written material, including contracts, statutes, and regulations.
  2. Write and Think Conceptually: Write and think conceptually, with the ability to analyze complex information and develop creative solutions.
  3. Handle Adversarial People: Handle adversarial people in a professional and respectful manner, with the ability to de-escalate conflicts and build strong relationships.

This role requires a high level of mental pressure, with the ability to:

  1. Handle Pressure Situations: Handle pressure situations, including multiple deadlines and competing demands.
  2. Work Overtime: Work overtime on occasion, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
