Position Overview

As a vital member of the Labour Relations team, the Associate Legal Counsel will report directly to the Managing Lawyer for Labour Relations. This role serves as a corporate resource for the organization, providing essential legal guidance and support to both NSHA and IWK. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with senior leadership to understand the strategic goals and operational requirements of the organizations, ensuring that legal advice aligns with their objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive legal advice and advocacy in the realm of labour law.
  • Interpret collective agreements and provide strategic direction on complex legal matters.
  • Analyze and resolve intricate issues independently and as part of the labour law team.
  • Represent the organization in grievance presentations at arbitration and other dispute resolution forums.
  • Engage in proactive legal research to remain informed on relevant labour law developments.
  • Provide legal representation to external parties, including courts and tribunals.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB).
  • Active member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society or eligible for membership.
  • A minimum of 8 years of pertinent experience in labour law, with a focus on client relations and collective bargaining.
  • Experience in the healthcare sector and risk management is preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of current labour legislation, regulations, and case law.
  • Exceptional analytical skills for addressing specific legal questions and issues.
  • Strong advocacy and interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.

Work Environment

This is a permanent, full-time position requiring 75 hours bi-weekly. The compensation for this role is competitive, and successful candidates may qualify for a comprehensive benefits package, including health and dental coverage, long-term disability, and a defined benefit pension plan.
