About the Organization

This position offers a chance to be part of the government's legal team – the Legal Services Division of the Department of Justice. Our legal professionals provide counsel and representation to the provincial government on critical legal and public policy matters.

We serve as the legal representatives for the Government of Nova Scotia, including Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions, ensuring that public affairs are managed effectively, efficiently, and in compliance with the law.

Opportunity Overview

If you possess experience in legal fields such as administrative law, employment law, contracts, regulations, child protection, and/or litigation, and are open to short-term assignments, we encourage you to submit your resume as outlined below.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Providing legal advice to Ministers, Deputy/Associate Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government officials on legal matters, negotiation, strategy, and public policy;
  2. Drafting and interpreting legislation and regulations;
  3. Preparing and interpreting contracts;
  4. Assisting with submissions to Cabinet;
  5. Communicating information about government and legal matters to the public or as part of public policy consultations;
  6. Collaborating on project teams with senior and intermediate staff from client departments.
Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will:

  1. Be a practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (or eligible for practicing membership), in good standing;
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience providing legal counsel to government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions;
  2. Experience in civil litigation;
  3. Experience in commercial transactions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong research, analytical, and organizational abilities. Effective and persuasive communication skills, both oral and written, are essential, along with the capability to work independently in a team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate will also exhibit creativity and innovation in addressing complex challenges and the adaptability to thrive in a dynamic and demanding setting.

Working Conditions

Physical Effort:

  1. Prolonged periods of sitting at a computer.

Sensory Attention:

  1. Ability to review extensive written materials, write, think conceptually, and strategize.
  2. High levels of mental focus and memory retention are required.
  3. Skill in managing adversarial interactions to de-escalate situations and foster understanding is frequently necessary.

Mental Pressure:

  1. Capability to handle high-pressure situations, multiple deadlines, and competing demands.
  2. Extended concentration is necessary during hearings and while drafting briefs.
  3. Must manage stressful situations effectively to extract relevant information without personal engagement or negative reactions.
  4. Occasional overtime may be required.
